Ning Chuan rejects the offer, humiliates Cao Bao by splashing him with food, and kills Green Wolf and Black Tiger. Cao Bao escapes on horseback and begins treating Ning Chuan as a personal enemy. 18

Attacks on the Caravan

Cao Bao turns to hired bandits after his recruitment attempt fails. He approaches Second Dragon Mountain, but Long Da and Long Er ignore his warnings and lead more than five hundred bandits into an attack that Ning Chuan destroys. 20 21

He then organizes a larger ambush at Eagle Sorrow Gorge by gathering high-ranking fighters from six bandit forces. When the confrontation begins, he withdraws to observe from cover; Ning Chuan kills the leading attackers and scatters the rest. 23 25

Cao Bao escapes Eagle Sorrow Gorge badly injured and reaches Qingshan County in beggar-like condition. A City Guard humiliates him and admits him only after he surrenders a silver bracelet as a bribe. 26
