Ever since the Ministry of Magic, at Amosta's urging, had relocated every prisoner from Azkaban Prison to Avalon, the Dementors had been completely deprived of food.
The Ministry's original opinion on these terrifying, bizarre creatures had been to leave them on the island to fend for themselves.
But Amosta had rejected that proposal.
Once the Dementors realized they could no longer obtain sustenance from wizards, their instinct to expand would drive them to madly assault the barriers surrounding Azkaban Island.
They might cross the seas and swarm toward every living continent.
To keep the Dementors obediently confined to Azkaban,
the Ministry had no choice but to ship vast numbers of livestock to the island for the Dementors to drain of their souls.
In less than two months, piles of bleached bones had filled every corner of Azkaban, nearly burying the first floor of the prison tower.
Yet the souls of livestock were ultimately nowhere near as "tasty" as human souls.
