Night had fallen, and lights came on one after another in the neatly arranged houses of the residential district. Though they were not as dazzling as the neon lights of the bustling commercial streets, the lights of countless homes had their own warmth.
The Detts' little house had a layout much like that of the Dursley family, Harry's aunt and uncle's home, which Amosta had visited before.
That was hardly surprising. Before coming to New York, the elderly couple had spent most of their lives in London, and they were more accustomed to the lifestyle there.
A genuine family gathering was taking place in the dining room beside the kitchen. Of the four people present, three understood each other without saying it, while Amelia alone looked dazedly at her parents and Amosta chatting merrily, feeling like an outsider.
Amelia glanced at Amosta's left hand resting on the table. There was now a watch on his wrist, a gift her parents had prepared for him without her knowing anything about it.
Although Amelia's daily life now leaned entirely toward the wizarding world, that did not mean her common sense regarding the Muggle world had disappeared. Converted into Galleons, the watch her parents had given Amosta was probably worth her annual income at the Ministry of Magic Congress.
That was rather beyond the bounds of ordinary social etiquette. Amelia had been shocked when she saw her parents bring out the gift, but what shocked her even more was that she had thought Amosta would not accept such an expensive present. Yet after only a few seconds of silence, Amosta had thanked them with a smile and, at her parents' urging, put on the watch.
This was far too strange. None of it made any sense!
