Commander Chen rode on horseback and called loudly to the soldiers behind him.

The soldiers answered in unison.
Though the daily patrols were exceedingly dull, they remained high-spirited.
Such was the steadfastness of border soldiers, of Ming Dynasty soldiers.
Even if they were merely patrolling, they still bore the responsibility of defending the land and protecting their homes.

While on patrol, Commander Chen suddenly smiled, clearly delighted.

"What good news?"
"Could it be that our pay is going up?" an old soldier asked with a grin.

Commander Chen laughed loudly.
"Could our pay really be going up?"

"Our pay is already decent enough to give our families a good life. If it goes up again, wouldn't life become even better?" Many of the soldiers looked eagerly at Commander Chen.

Its pay was therefore
