"Did your mother teach you all this?"
Old Chen ultimately couldn't resist asking Huo Yuhao. In his view, aside from Huo Yun'er, who had followed Dai Hao back then, there was no one else who could have taught Huo Yuhao these things.
"No." Huo Yuhao shook his head.
"Then how did you know all this?" Old Chen was rather surprised.
"I learned it all from a Street Stall Literature book. Some of the things in it happened to work well with Dai Luoli," Huo Yuhao explained.
"Street Stall Literature?" Old Chen froze for a moment. "What was that book called?"
Huo Yuhao turned to look at Old Chen. After a brief silence, he said, "That book was called 'Douluo Continent.'"
"Douluo Continent?" Old Chen caught on and raised a brow. "Kid, you weren't reading those storybooks, were you? I'm telling you, they're fine for casual entertainment, but don't take too much of what's in them seriously."
"Back then, these storybooks caused quite a stir in Star Luo City. Things like Tang San being able to lift a cauldron at three years old, running a lap around the Star Dou Great Forest in a day, being born with the phantoms of nine golden dragons appearing, heavenly auspicious signs descending, and so on—that was all nonsense made up by certain people."
"The most outrageous one was a storybook called Legend of the White Tiger. It turned your father, Dai Hao, into a god descending to earth, saying he chased down and slaughtered Sun Moon Empire troops on the battlefield, displaying the spirit of an empire's sons. This old man followed your father for so many years, yet only after reading those storybooks did I learn that such things had apparently happened."
"Don't worry, Old Chen. I know where to draw the line." Huo Yuhao nodded with an odd expression. What the heck was all that?
"That's good." Old Chen finally understood why Huo Yuhao was so good at drawing inferences from one example. So it was because he had read too many street-stall storybooks.
Naturally, Huo Yuhao did not explain that what he had read was very different from what Old Chen was talking about.
But speaking of which, there really was a Street Stall Literature book called 'Douluo Continent.' He hadn't made it up. Besides that, there were others, such as:
"The First Generation of Shrek's Seven Devils: The Secret to Becoming Gods—A Must-Read for Soul Masters!"
"The Reason for Spirit Hall's Destruction Is Actually..."
"Step-by-Step Guide to Turning Soul Beasts into Wives"
There were simply too many of them.
People always needed something for amusement, and that was how storybooks came to be.
Still, from the sound of it, Old Chen's Legend of the White Tiger seemed somewhat more grounded in reality...
"Mm."
A muffled groan suddenly rang out. Huo Yuhao turned around and saw that Old Chen had already cut off the Soul Power feeding into the Bewildering Stone. Dai Luoli, who had been experiencing the killing intent of the Yin Demon Turtle, had gone weak in the legs and collapsed onto the floor on his butt.
"Huff, huff." Having broken free from the illusion, Dai Luoli was drenched in cold sweat and still gasping heavily.
Huo Yuhao slowly walked over to Dai Luoli. When he reached his side, he extended a hand.
Dai Luoli was still catching his breath when he suddenly noticed the outstretched hand. He had assumed it was Grandpa Chen, but when he looked up, he froze.
It was the young man whom Grandpa Chen had told him to call big brother.
Huo Yuhao smiled. "What, is the floor so comfortable that you don't want to get up?"
Perhaps Huo Yuhao's smile was too gentle, but Dai Luoli instinctively reached out and grasped his hand.
The next moment, Huo Yuhao pulled, helping Dai Luoli to his feet.
"Thank you." Dai Luoli fell silent for a moment before speaking. He had no friends his own age in the Duke's Mansion.
"No need to thank me," Huo Yuhao said casually.
On the other side, Old Chen smiled as he put away the Bewildering Stone, then walked over to the two of them. "Go rest for a while. We'll continue this afternoon."
Huo Yuhao and Dai Luoli both nodded.
Huo Yuhao and Dai Luoli went to rest in the living room for the time being, but Old Chen did not go with them. He intended to check on the situation. No one had come looking to cause trouble for Huo Yuhao from last night until now, which left him puzzled.
He believed that either the Duchess or Dai Huabin must have known that Huo Yuhao was hiding here with him.
"What is your Martial Soul?"
After arriving in the living room, Dai Luoli couldn't help asking Huo Yuhao. Perhaps because of what had happened at the Training Ground, he no longer rejected Huo Yuhao as much.
During the morning lessons, Old Chen had arranged for Huo Yuhao to study knowledge and techniques in the Library.
Huo Yuhao pointed at his own eyes.
"Your Martial Soul is your eyes?" Dai Luoli's eyes lit up. He had also studied knowledge about Martial Souls and knew that an eye Martial Soul was a Body Martial Soul, an exceptionally powerful kind.
"Then what level are you now? Are you a Soul Grandmaster yet?"
"I'm only level eight right now," Huo Yuhao answered Dai Luoli truthfully.
"Huh?" Dai Luoli stood there in a daze. Had he heard wrong?
Level eight?
"Your Martial Soul is so powerful, so why is your Soul Power Level so lousy?" Dai Luoli was utterly confused.
Huo Yuhao's mouth twitched. Couldn't this kid be a little more tactful?
"My Innate Soul Power is only level one, so my cultivation speed is very slow," Huo Yuhao explained.
Only then did Dai Luoli understand. He sighed, his little face full of sympathy. "Then you're even more pitiful than I am. At least I have Innate Soul Power at level three."
Huo Yuhao clenched and unclenched his fists.
"Oh, right. Will you be studying and cultivating here with Grandpa Chen in the future too?" Dai Luoli looked at Huo Yuhao expectantly.
"No." Huo Yuhao shook his head.
A look of disappointment immediately appeared on Dai Luoli's little face.
"You seem to really hope I'll stay here to cultivate too?" Huo Yuhao said with a smile.
Dai Luoli nodded, his expression dim. "I don't have a single friend. Every day, aside from cultivating, I stay home alone to read and study. I thought you were like me and would keep studying and cultivating here with Grandpa Chen. Then I'd have a friend."
Huo Yuhao looked calmly at Dai Luoli, who had lowered his head in disappointment, then said after a pause, "Am I not your friend now?"
Dai Luoli abruptly raised his head.
"Even if I'm your only friend, remember this: having many friends isn't necessarily a good thing. Quality over quantity—that's what matters." Huo Yuhao spoke in the tone of someone who had been through it.
Dai Luoli froze for a moment, quietly mulling over Huo Yuhao's words.
"I heard Old Chen say that your dream is to become a Titled Douluo?" Huo Yuhao changed the subject.
Hearing this, Dai Luoli scratched his head shyly. It was one thing for elders to know about his dream, but having someone his own age know was rather embarrassing. Still, he nodded. "I want to become a Titled Douluo so I can slap the faces of those people who look down on me and my mother."
"But becoming a Titled Douluo is extremely difficult." Huo Yuhao looked at Dai Luoli.
"I understand all that." Dai Luoli held out both hands and stared at them as he said in a deep voice, "But no matter how hard it is, I'll work hard to cultivate. Ten years, thirty years, sixty years—as long as I don't die, I'll never give up."
A faint smile appeared on Huo Yuhao's lips. "If I had a way to help you speed up your cultivation, would you be willing to do it?"
"What way? As long as it can make me cultivate faster, I'm willing to do anything." Dai Luoli's voice was excited, his gaze blazing.
"Anything?" Huo Yuhao paused. "Then if this method had a very high chance of costing you your life, would you still be willing?"
Dai Luoli's expression stiffened. Looking at Huo Yuhao's utterly serious expression, he did not know how to answer for a moment.
Huo Yuhao was in no hurry. Smiling, he said, "Think it over. Then, when Old Chen returns, tell him what you decide."
Dai Luoli fell silent, clearly shaken by Huo Yuhao's words.
In truth, he was not very familiar with death. But he knew that once a person died, they would be gone forever, just like when his grandmother had passed away.
When his grandmother died, Mother had cried nonstop. If he died, what would Mother do?
She would definitely be heartbroken, wouldn't she?
He did not want to see Mother sad.
With that thought, Dai Luoli's hands suddenly clenched into fists.
