Behind him, Chai San had deliberately slowed down and arrived late, more than ten seconds after Chai Wu charged into the weeds.
He had clearly spotted the messy footprints on the ground as well. Looking up at the weeds, he visibly hesitated, likely having come to the same conclusion as Chai Wu.
Just as he stood there hesitating, a figure silently descended from a tree. Soul Power surged beneath his feet, making his steps exceptionally light.
Huo Yuhao stared coldly at Chai San's back. His right hand slowly grasped the sheath holding the White Tiger Dagger, then gently drew the Level 5 Soul Tool from it.
The blade was as thin as a cicada's wing and shimmered with a cold gleam. Even beneath the scorching sunlight, its chill could not be concealed.
Chai San's expression shifted for several seconds before he finally seemed to make up his mind. He decided not to enter the weeds.
If Chai Wu caught the target, he could say he had been too slow and chosen the wrong direction. The reward might be smaller, but he would still get a share. There was no need to risk his life.
After all, everyone knew he was genuinely weak, not pretending.
If Chai Wu failed to catch the target and got ambushed to death instead, Chai San would not lose out either. At least his own life would be safe.
"Staying alive comes first."
Chai San muttered inwardly.
But he did not notice the expressionless figure quietly approaching him.
"Urgh!"
Just as Chai San was about to turn around and retreat, a violent pain suddenly tore through his heart. At the same time, a gloved hand clamped over his mouth, preventing him from making a sound.
Chai San's pupils abruptly dilated, and his entire body turned ice-cold. Enduring the agonizing pain in his heart, he tried to resist. But he was already weak, and the more he struggled, the blade embedded in his heart kept twisting, shredding his flesh and stopping his resistance. What seemed like normal struggling was nothing more than futile effort.
Perhaps because of the adrenaline, Chai San's mind was exceptionally clear. He could feel something spilling out from his heart, while his body grew lighter and lighter.
Gradually, his head began to spin, and he no longer had the strength to resist.
"Take a deep breath. Dizziness is normal."
A low voice sounded beside Chai San's ear. Terror appeared in his eyes. He recognized that voice.
Huo Yuhao stood calmly behind Chai San, his left hand gripping the White Tiger Dagger, which had pierced straight through Chai San's heart. Blood sprayed from the wound, staining his clothes red.
Chai San slowly stopped resisting. After his body convulsed a few times, his pupils gradually dilated until he finally stopped breathing.
After killing Chai San, Huo Yuhao did not relax. He stared straight ahead as the tall weeds were pushed aside and a burly figure slowly emerged.
Chai Wu looked at Huo Yuhao with a complicated expression, tinged with excitement.
"I almost really got fooled by you."
Huo Yuhao casually pulled out the White Tiger Dagger and shoved Chai San's corpse aside. There was a trace of surprise in his eyes, but nothing more.
"They're all dead. Steward Wang will take the largest share of the reward, but I'll get more too." Chai Wu spoke to Huo Yuhao. "Using fake footprints to trick me into chasing you—that was a pretty good plan."
"Unfortunately, my father used to be a hunter. I'm far too familiar with the false trail you set up."
"So you waited for me to kill Chai San before coming out?" Huo Yuhao tightened his grip on the White Tiger Dagger.
Chai Wu answered without hesitation, "Chai San deliberately slowed down because he wanted me to fight you first, then reap the benefits. Why can't I do the same to him?"
"You ran several hundred meters, then used Soul Power to hide the sound of your footsteps. You probably don't have much Soul Power left now, do you? Oh, right. Your Sleeve Arrow should still have arrows in it. I need to be careful."
Huo Yuhao frowned slightly, as though his secret had been exposed.
Seeing this, Chai Wu smiled. "I originally wanted to capture you alive, but that's too risky. Killing you is the safer option."
As he spoke, Chai Wu slowly edged forward, closing the distance between them while distracting Huo Yuhao. "The more careless someone is, the easier it is for them to stumble when everything is going their way. That idiot Chai San made exactly that mistake."
As the distance between them steadily shrank, a subtle smile flickered across Chai Wu's lips. Yet he did not let his guard down. Neither the White Tiger Dagger nor the concealed Sleeve Arrow on Huo Yuhao's wrist was something to take lightly. He did not underestimate Huo Yuhao just because he was a little brat.
Could a child who had killed two people in a row possibly be ordinary?
Finally, when Chai Wu judged that he had reached a distance from which he could instantly subdue Huo Yuhao, he stopped. Across from him, Huo Yuhao seemed to have truly been distracted. He subconsciously lowered his head to look at the already dead Chai San on the ground.
"Whoosh."
The opportunity had come. The instant Huo Yuhao made that movement, Chai Wu's eyes locked onto his prey like a venomous snake. His legs exploded with force, and he lunged forward like a leopard. Veins bulged across his arm as his open palm clenched into a fist and shot toward Huo Yuhao's head.
Yet at the very moment Chai Wu thrilled at the thought of capturing Huo Yuhao, a crack had somehow opened between Huo Yuhao's brows. A faint light flickered within it, and in the next instant, Huo Yuhao faced the now-close Chai Wu directly.
The wind from the punch had already blown against Huo Yuhao's face. Just as Chai Wu's excitement surged, a streak of Golden Light reflected in his pupils.
"Whoosh."
Within the weed-choked forest, a conspicuous flash of gold spread across everything.
The surroundings seemed to fall silent as the two stood face-to-face.
Chai Wu's fist stopped in midair. His lips moved slightly as he stared blankly at Huo Yuhao, who stood bathed in sunlight. A ray of sunlight fell upon Huo Yuhao, shrouding him in brilliant radiance, while the strange crack between his brows slowly vanished and everything returned to calm.
"My Soul Power is indeed almost depleted, but... who told you I didn't have other methods?" Huo Yuhao slowly raised his right hand. As his sleeve slipped back slightly, it revealed the circular Sleeve Arrow strapped to his wrist.
"Whoosh!"
In the next instant, Huo Yuhao directly triggered the Sleeve Arrow, firing an exceptionally sharp Iron Spike that instantly pierced through Chai Wu's brow.
"Why did you..."
Chai Wu's gaze went unfocused, filled with confusion. His body went limp, and he toppled straight backward. He could not understand why someone without a Soul Ring could use a Soul Skill.
A wisp of invisible energy gathered from Chai Wu's corpse, becoming a current that flowed into Huo Yuhao's body.
Huo Yuhao stepped forward and pulled the Iron Spike from Chai Wu's brow.
He casually explained, "I'm the protagonist. It's normal for me to be a little special, right?"
People truly could not afford to be careless, or they might easily stumble. So Huo Yuhao chose to explain things to the dead. That way, there would be no chance of an unexpected reversal.
Of course, ordinary people were one thing, while Soul Masters were another.
Some Soul Masters could unleash special attacks even after dying. Huo Yuhao knew that well.
After saying that, Huo Yuhao looked up at the sky. Through the canopy of leaves, he smiled faintly and softly said to the sun, "Thanks."
What Chai Wu had failed to notice was that Huo Yuhao had always remained where the sunlight could reach him.
