Lai Er felt uneasy as he walked through the dense fog.
He was following the Contract Land's envoy to the gathering point. Though he had prepared himself thoroughly before coming, he had still overestimated his own ability to endure it. He always felt that the outlines within the fog were his hometown, so every time he passed one of those new villages, his heart trembled with fear. When he realized it was not, he would sigh in relief, only for that relief to eventually turn into melancholy.
The repeated experience tormented him over and over again until he could no longer bear it and decided to do something to distract himself.
So, naturally, he turned his attention to the envoy leading the way ahead.
"Hey, brother." Lai Er quickened his pace and walked alongside the unsmiling envoy. "How much longer until we get there?"
The envoy answered flatly, "Almost there."
What did "almost there" even mean?
It was just the two of them. Couldn't he be more specific?
Lai Er was deeply dissatisfied, but he did not show it because he was afraid the envoy would stop responding to him altogether.
So he asked again, "Brother, are you the real one?"
The envoy glanced at him as if he were an idiot.
"Mm, you should be the real one. Your eyes are different from those of your master." Lai Er made his judgment. "His eyes are more... well... Is he a woman?"
"Don't ask what you shouldn't."
"How am I supposed to know what I shouldn't ask unless I ask?" Lai Er said. "If I touch on something taboo, just tell me then."
The envoy ignored Lai Er.
But as a black market merchant, Lai Er's skin was thick enough. So he continued trying to get close. "I think the
