The Hungarian Labor Party and the Austro-Hungarian Empire erupted into a great battle at Komárno. To seize this small city, both sides had assembled nearly two hundred thousand troops, and Komárno became a living hell in an instant.

The roar of artillery went on without end, from daylight into darkness. Under the baptism of shellfire, both banks of the Danube River at midnight were as bright as day.

Under the cover of artillery fire, Austrian forces launched their general assault on Komárno along the Rhine River and the Váh River.

An officer rushed frantically into the headquarters of the Hungarian garrison at Komárno. His face was smeared with black ash and blood, his hair disheveled, and anxiety filled his eyes.

The so-called Komárno City Defense Command Center was merely an inconspicuous private residence within the city, with only two guards posted at its entrance.

"Comrade Frablay!" the guards greeted the newcomer.

But Frablay was in no mood to deal with them. He nodded out of habit in greeting, then strode into the command center without a care.

"Comrade Šurányi, the enemy artillery is far too fierce! The fortifications and shelters we hastily built simply cannot effectively withstand the Austrian bombardment. The outer positions have completely failed!" Frablay said anxiously the moment he entered.

Šurányi frowned tightly. "The positions have been lost?"

"I've had everyone withdraw into the city," Frablay said. "The defenses we threw together in such a short time are completely useless. They can only create casualties for nothing."

Šurányi was furious that Frablay had voluntarily abandoned the outer positions, but he also understood that trying to stop the Austro-Hungarian Army with those positions was nearly impossible. Hungary's hold over Komárno had never been secure, and they had arrived there far too
