Poland's geographic position was even worse than Germany's. Poland was clearly no worthless patch of land; on the contrary, it possessed enormous strategic value, yet it was practically indefensible.

Sosnkowski continued, "For us right now, the best outcome is to pray that war does not break out, quite apart from my earlier extreme speculation."
"Once Germany and Soviet Union go to war, regardless of the final result, we will already have lost half the battle."
His words left Poland's upper ranks even more astonished. President Piłsudski asked, "General Sosnkowski, what do you mean by that?"
Sosnkowski said, "Mr. President, if Germany and Soviet Union go to war, do you think a war between nations of their scale can end easily?"
President Piłsudski naturally shook his head. He admitted that Soviet Union's national strength lagged far behind Germany's now, but given Soviet Union's sheer scale, any country in the world would find it difficult to defeat it in a short time.
"With Soviet Union's population and land area, even if Germany led the entire Axis powers bloc, it would still take considerable time to conquer it," President Piłsudski said.
Sosnkowski added, "More than that, if Soviet Union's generals are skilled enough, they may even be able to strike back against Germany."
