To the northwest of Karatu lay the famed Serengeti Plains, a true world of animals.

At present, in every region of the East African colony, aside from the Upper Coastal Region, which had undergone a thorough purge, the rest were basically beast territory.

Even the indigenous people, whose numbers were relatively large compared to the immigrants, appeared tiny and insignificant before East Africa's immense animal herds.

These abundant animal resources allowed the indigenous people to live prosperous lives simply by hunting.

After each day's hunt, they merely sang and danced, then went to sleep when night fell, free of any other worries. After all, the animals truly could not be hunted dry, so there was absolutely no need to fret over tomorrow's food.

As immigrants who had come to Africa to farm, however, they naturally could not imitate the indigenous people and live by hunting.

Their thinking had been steeped in thousands of years of agricultural culture. They believed in growing wealthy through diligence, and for the moment, they could not appreciate the indigenous attitude toward life—thinking only of the present and never of the future.

In truth, people's ideas were bestowed by their social circumstances. For example, the indigenous people had not developed states, yet Africa's environment allowed them to live quite well under the most primitive tribal systems. Once they entered relatively advanced social systems, however, their development instead became neither dead nor alive.

After all, the humans who had left East Africa millions of years ago had all faced the problem of survival, so they had actively learned cultivation and animal husbandry.
