"Mediate?" Ernst was only slightly surprised, but he immediately said as expected, "Things have developed much as we anticipated. It's just that the situation in this war still isn't clear, yet the British have already grown restless."
Constantin asked somewhat worriedly, "Are we really going to agree to a ceasefire with Portugal?"
In Constantin's eyes, Angola and Mozambique were already meat at their mouths. Spitting them out now would be far too painful.
Ernst understood Constantin's little thoughts. He himself also wanted to seize Portugal's two colonies in one gulp, but clearly, now was not the time.
"There is definitely no way for us to swallow Portugal's two colonies in one bite this time. If this were merely a dispute between us and Portugal, it naturally wouldn't matter. But behind this war lies, in truth, the conflict between us and Britain. Therefore, the British will certainly preserve Portugal's two colonies. They need the Portuguese to hold back East Africa's development."
Seeing his son put it that way, Constantin understood the logic behind the matter, though he still felt unwilling. "We can't let the Portuguese off this time. We have to make them bleed heavily, so other countries understand the consequences of provoking us. Even with the British shielding them, it won't do them any good."
Ernst greatly agreed with this. If the British wanted a ceasefire at this point, that was possible; East Africa did not care either way. But if the Portuguese did not offer compensation that satisfied him, then things could not simply be whatever the British said they were.
"From those two colonies, we must at least carve off a large piece of land. We cannot favor one over the other; it should make East Africa's territory look more symmetrical." Ernst had made up his mind to
