Mu Yue used his actions to tell everyone his choice. Asking him to kill himself was pure wishful thinking.
If Shisui or Obito had been standing here instead of Nagato, Mu Yue might have been interested in playing at faking his death.
That would most likely have provoked them into directly awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan, causing their strength to soar.
Nagato could not be pushed that far. Although he still could not truly use the Rinnegan at this point, he already possessed it.
What Nagato needed was not to awaken the Rinnegan, but to uncover its power. Intense stimulation could accelerate that process, but it was not an absolute necessity like the Mangekyō Sharingan.
