"Don't worry, I'm fine. It wasn't because of you. It'll grow back soon."
Lei Zongchao saw Meng Chao's surprise and gently reassured him.
Sure enough, as he spoke, the little finger on his left hand grew back, gradually wrapping itself around the stark white finger bone.
Meng Chao was certain this was not cellular regeneration.
Because he had not seen the blood threads, granulation tissue, and scabbing that should have accompanied a healing wound.
Lei Zongchao's little finger seemed to vanish out of thin air, then reappear out of thin air.
It was only a little more "faded" than before, looking somewhat blurry.
Meng Chao blinked hard and stared closely, yet still felt that Lei Zongchao's little finger seemed shrouded in a faint mist, ready to vanish into smoke at any moment.
As for the corner of his mouth, though flesh had reappeared there, it carried the same translucent sense of emptiness. Through the flesh, Meng Chao could still vaguely see the teeth inside.
"Teacher Lei, what exactly is going on?" Meng Chao was thoroughly baffled.
"As you can see, I'm dying."
Lei Zongchao examined the little finger of his left hand. His expression held neither sorrow nor joy as he calmly said, "Or rather, in some probabilities, I'm already dead—did you just see several different versions of me? Some covered in wounds, some drenched in blood, some badly decayed, and some even reduced to a pile of dry bones?"
Meng Chao's eyes widened, and he nodded vigorously.
"Those were all versions of me in 'different possibilities.'"
Lei Zongchao explained, "You know that whether it was exploring the Ancient Ruins in the old days, fighting zombies and monsters, or absorbing incomparably violent Spiritual Energy in an attempt to break through the limits of life, I went through countless near-death experiences.
