Background / History

Emperor Longqing ruled Great Sheng while pursuing immortality through Daoist cultivation. His court expended substantial resources on Immortal Seeking and alchemy, while he cultivated in Myriad Longevity Palace and relied on trusted eunuchs and court officials to manage imperial affairs 160 183.

After Chen Sanshi's defense of Poyang County and evacuation of civilians across the Hongze River, Longqing chose to reward him publicly while keeping him under Sun Xiangzong's influence rather than transferring him to the capital. The resulting decree elevated Chen to General of Martial Virtue and Light Chariot Commandant, accompanied by gold, silver, silk, medicine, and imperial wine 112 116.

Longqing personally attended the Fengchan ceremony at Ziwei Mountain despite an assassination attempt. Chen shielded him during the attack, earning the Emperor's trust and an audience in which Longqing compared him to the younger Sun Xiangzong 169 171.

During the subsequent palace coup, the Crown Prince used Incense God Cult power to attack his father.
