As Chen's achievements increased, Longqing treated him as both a valuable general and a political asset. He praised Chen's return of the Heavenly Book as proof of loyalty, sought to make him an example for younger talents, and planned assignments that would let him acquire still greater merit. 151 He also elevated Xu Wencai at Chen's request, granting the old scholar the title of Mr. Sleeping Dragon and a third-rank command. 151 152

During the events at Ziwei Mountain, Longqing personally met Chen Sanshi and asked him to report on Sun Xiangzong's condition, stating that Sun was one of his last remaining old brothers.
