"Little Ye Zi."

Zhou Zhengde murmured the name as he toyed with a photograph in his hand.

It was afternoon in the fortress. Zhou Zhengde had just finished his regular duties, along with all the extra overtime piled onto them.

Doctor Wei Na arrived at the Security Office on time. She knocked on the door, then entered carrying a stack of paper files.

"How is it? Are the sample analyses finished?"

"His blood contains an extremely complex form of energy that's difficult to identify. There are no genetic mutations, but the muscle tissue throughout his body has undergone changes medicine can't explain, including his internal organs!"

Doctor Wei Na spoke in a low, excited voice:

"Finally, we humans are beginning to mutate and evolve to fight the Blade Beasts!"

Zhou Zhengde carefully flipped through the files.

He said quietly, "Only the two of us can know about this. Have the instrument data been deleted? Later, I'll introduce him directly to my Maternal Grandfather. I don't trust anyone else, including the Governor and my mother. I'll stake everything I have to protect him from the threat of the 13th Institute."

"They've been deleted, physically. Approve a few new instruments for me later."

Doctor Wei Na abruptly changed the subject.

"Is everything really settled in the Lower City? Don't we need to tell him what happens next?"

"Do you want him to take another reckless risk and wipe out those Psionicists?"

Zhou Zhengde gave a bitter smile.

"This has already become a big enough mess. I'm barely able to contain it.

"My mother is in a particularly passive position because of Ban Wenying.

"The 13th Institute forcibly occupied those facilities. They're protecting their secrets. If I'm right, the Black Fire Gang is an important source of Human Experimentation material for Biological Institute 13.

"Now we need to find that list—or rather, the ledger.

"The list has two parts. One is what those powerful people are looking for, because they're afraid of being utterly disgraced. The other is what I want to find: the 13th Institute's Human Experimentation data.

"And come take a look. My people found this—Little Ye Zi, the one Mu Liang has been searching for."

He placed the photograph on the desk and pushed it over.

Doctor Wei Na picked up the photo, her brow deeply furrowed.

In the picture, a girl in a white dress carrying a suitcase was being taken away by two Psionicists in Combat Suits. One of the female Psionicists was holding her hand.

"She's Ye Zi. They questioned Wanlijin's members. Little Ye Zi was fairly well-known in the greenhouse district because she was obedient and pretty."

Zhou Zhengde muttered softly:

"She's already been taken to the Psionicists' base in the Upper City."

Doctor Wei Na asked, "Why is Mu Liang looking for Ye Zi?"

"I don't know." Zhou Zhengde shook his head. "Maybe he wants to put a bullet in her. Didn't Mu Liang say that she killed those dozen or so orphans?"

"Wait! My brain can't process this!"

Doctor Wei Na thought back carefully and spoke slowly:

"Mu Liang lived in that cabin for a while. He personally told me that he rather liked those orphans. Ye Zi should have been the oldest among them.

"He even offered to owe you a favor and asked you to step in and seek help from the Wanlijin Gang, to pull those orphans out of this vortex.

"But Ye Zi killed them with more than a dozen kitchen knives, with her own hands.

"This... my god, there must be more to Ye Zi than simple psychological distortion... No wonder Mu Liang broke down emotionally."

Zhou Zhengde said quietly, "Mu Liang spoke with me too, through text. He said that although the children were noisy, they hadn't been indoctrinated with criminal ideas. They were pure. So how should we help him now? This could very well affect his mental health."

Doctor Wei Na said, "When I came over, he already seemed fine. He asked me where the library in the Middle City was, and he's gone there to borrow books."

"All right."

Zhou Zhengde thought for a moment.

"Then how about making tonight's party as lively as possible? Invite a few more friends?

"The ecological problems of the Lower City are where I'll focus my efforts next. But to solve the Lower City's ecology, we first have to reform the rules set by the Upper City.

"The Upper City's exploitation and oppression of the Lower City largely stem from the selfishness of those old people.

"Though this may be politically incorrect to say, people are born into different positions with no path for advancement. That is the murder of human nature."

Doctor Wei Na smiled. "Sure, naive Zhou. You can work toward your ideals, but don't forget one thing."

"What?"

"The root of it all is the Blade Beasts. In the more than hundred years Human Civilization has spent fighting them, we've already come infinitely close to failure."

Doctor Wei Na muttered softly:

"They're right. You were born in the wrong era. If you had lived in the age when humans ruled this planet, your background and character would have made you an outstanding party leader.

"But this isn't that era.

"Don't discuss politics with a doctor, especially a female doctor."

She spun around, her sexy figure swaying gently.

"I've already given up pursuing Mu Liang. He really is a conservative, even more conservative than you. But a few of my sisters are extreme conservatives too, so I'll invite them to our party tonight.

"Can you use your connections to get a little alcohol? Young Master Zhou."

"No." Zhou Zhengde decisively shook his head. "That's an inefficient use of food."

"Tch, I'll get it myself."

Doctor Wei Na rolled her eyes, turned with a dark expression, and strode away.

As she left the Security Office, she happened to see that familiar figure.

Wang Jixuan had both hands in his pockets and two books tucked under his arm. He was walking with his head lowered around a distant corner.

Doctor Wei Na was about to call out to him, but held herself back.

She watched Wang Jixuan's retreating figure and sighed softly. Then a confident smile appeared on her lips.

Lose this little belly fat and find a new handsome guy!

And introduce a pretty girl to Mu Liang while she was at it, so he wouldn't really wait until twenty-five for Genetic Matching. That would be reproducing solely for the sake of producing superior offspring.

That was what Doctor Wei Na thought.

Their analysis report probably won't reveal anything. Human Civilization here has no understanding of how to use Qi.

Wang Jixuan felt the currents flowing within his body, glanced at the card in his hand, and searched for his new dormitory.

He had accepted the protection Zhou Zhengde offered and decided that, aside from making Zhou Zhengde a few Longevity Pills later, he would also make him some of what ordinary men needed most...

Bone Strengthening Pills.

They were excellent pills, capable of giving Zhou Zhengde an abundance of confidence.

The new dormitory was not far from Central Ring Park. The streets were fully monitored, and Wang Jixuan could find it after turning two corners.

The moment he entered this Capillary Passage, he could not help frowning.

Several thugs were surrounding a young man over there. The bag of emergency rations in the young man's hands was forcibly snatched away.

Blood-bag squeezing.

Wang Jixuan slowly walked forward, stopped within a doorway, and took several nuts from his pocket.

A loud shout suddenly rang out from the end of the corridor:

"Fuck! What are you doing? Looking to die?"

Several thugs in blue tracksuits charged over at a run.

The thugs who had been squeezing blood bags were pinned against the wall, and both sides immediately began hurling accusations at each other's direct relatives.

Thugs fighting over turf?

Wang Jixuan silently pulled out several more nuts.

Those nuts had followed him through the Lower City and had seen their share of major scenes. This little incident was truly beneath mention.

Just as he was about to act, a familiar male voice reached his ears.

Lazy, with a hint of cockiness.

"Squeezing blood bags again? Didn't I tell you that this area is under my control too? There won't be any more blood-bag squeezing around here.

"Wasn't the beating your boss got last time enough?"

A group of thugs instantly fell silent.

Several question marks seemed to hang over Wang Jixuan's forehead as he slightly leaned out to look.

At the end of the corridor, four young men and women in blue tracksuits marched forward in goose-step. When they reached the scene, they turned in unison, stood with their hands behind their backs against the wall, and shouted together:

"Brother Yu, hello!"

The blood-bag-squeezing thugs trembled all over, then obediently lined up against the wall, as well-behaved as kindergarten children.

At the end of the passage, a thug leader in a black tank top and cropped pants strolled over, sporting an Explosion Head.

After some time training, the already sturdy thug leader had developed obvious muscle definition. His two silver-gray mechanical prosthetic limbs flexibly clenched and opened.

That face still looked as punchable as ever.

He spoke lazily:

"What's this? I told you, but you wouldn't listen. Do I have to cripple every last one of you?"

Buzz, buzz!

The two prosthetic limbs clenched into fists and opened into palms, repeatedly striking against each other.

"Your boss didn't show up for yesterday's volunteer event at the nursing home either, did he?

"I told him to give a third of his Food Quota to those old folks, and he didn't do it either, did he?

"Very good. Very nice."

He gave a light laugh, having already reached the thugs. Suddenly, he thrust his right hand out sideways and grabbed one thug by the neck.

The engine in his mechanical prosthetic limb spun rapidly.

The thug's body slowly rose into the air while the others hurriedly crouched down, clutching their heads in fright.

"Go back and tell your boss that all of the thirteenth floor is under the protection of my big brother, Zhou Zhengde.

"My big brother said blood bags are banned, bullying is banned, and trafficking is banned. If your boss doesn't like it, let him fight me. I'm giving him one last chance. Get your asses to the nursing home and volunteer right now!"

Lan Yuzai violently flung his arm, throwing that little thug several meters away. The other thugs scrambled away on all fours.

Lan Yuzai lightly curled his lip, while the thugs in blue tracksuits applauded together.

"Thank you, Brother Yu!"

The young man who had been saved shouted excitedly:

"Brother Yu! Can I follow you from now on?"

"Follow me? Follow what? Live your life properly, idiot! In times like these, being able to live with dignity is already damn good, understand?"

Lan Yuzai snapped irritably:

"I'm protecting you to atone for my sins. Otherwise, when I see my big big brother in the future, I won't even have the face to greet him. Get lost already!

"Continue patrolling!

"Listen up, all of you!

"We help with what the Security Team handles!

"We also handle what the Security Team doesn't!

"Authorized by Captain Zhou! Guided by the big shots! This is... the Good People Gang!"

"Brother Yu, that was so badass!"

"Of course it was. Doctor Wei Na wrote it. There's an even more badass part—I need to get into the mood first. Ahem, ahem..."

Lan Yuzai led his underlings toward the edge of the thirteenth floor.

Wang Jixuan could not help raising a hand to his forehead. A million complaints filled his heart, and he did not know where to begin.

He laughed freely, and a little more light appeared in his calm eyes.

Just as Daoist Wang was about to look for his room, his Spiritual Sense suddenly twitched.

Qi.

So much Qi—Mottled Qi!

His body tensed. He pressed himself inside the doorway, then immediately reacted and relaxed. Facing the entrance, he sank his own aura into his limbs and bones, holding himself perfectly still as he compared the Room Card.

Dense footsteps sounded beside his ears.

A group of Psionicists passed through the ring area at the end of the Capillary Passage, advancing toward the 13th Floor Security Office.
