Da Hui's Past

Da Hui's full name was Gray Night Chinchilla, a strength-type Pet Beast.

He was incredibly strong and could lift objects weighing over a ton, but his temperament was gentle. He was generally used as a porter.

Aside from being somewhat stronger, Gray Night Chinchillas had no particularly outstanding qualities. They were also universally acknowledged on Blue Star as Pet Beasts with no Evolution Path, so few people contracted one as their own Pet Beast.

Ye Bai had found Da Hui on a night of torrential rain, when he spotted the battered, wound-covered Da Hui in a pile of garbage.

At the time, his fur had not been gray but snowy white. He was an unusually colored Pet Beast, one that could fetch a hefty price on the Black Market.

Ye Bai had secretly glanced at Da Hui. Countless wounds on his body were bleeding, and the worst of them was the wound on his abdomen, where even half his intestines were exposed.

There were marks around his wrists and ankles from shackles.

There was also a collar around his neck, like a dog tag.

He lay on the garbage heap, barely clinging to life. Ye Bai had thought Da Hui had only just died and was about to steer clear of the trouble when Da Hui's hand grabbed his ankle.

Ye Bai looked down and met those enormous azure eyes.

From the dog tag around Da Hui's neck and the restraint marks on his hands, it was clear that this fellow had likely escaped from some secret research institute.

Rain poured down in sheets, and the roaring downpour would wash away many traces.

When Ye Bai released Da Hui from the Beast Card, Da Hui was as stiff as a corpse. If not for the faint breathing from his belly, Ye Bai would have disposed of him as a body long ago.

Because the Breeding House's medical equipment was rudimentary, Ye Bai could only give Da Hui basic treatment. He stitched up Da Hui's wounds and injected him with the few antibiotics available in the shop. After that, all he could do was leave it to fate.

The positioning system inside the dog tag had already been destroyed by Da Hui, while Ye Bai removed its remaining Self-Destruct function.

Ye Bai had originally thought Da Hui would develop a high fever that night, so he had prepared fever medicine and ice.

Because of this, he lost most of his memories. He only remembered that he had been abandoned. Everything about escaping from the research institute, including why he had suffered such severe injuries, had been forgotten.

This immediately put Ye Bai on alert, so he did everything in his power to conceal Da Hui's tracks. Sure enough, a few days later, some unfamiliar people appeared on the streets.

For this reason, Ye Bai had even made a special trip far away to forge proof of purchasing a Gray Night Chinchilla, all to prevent anyone from coming to his door someday.

Since Da Hui's fur and eye colors had both changed, coupled with the forged documentation Ye Bai created by hacking into the system, those strangers investigated several times without discovering Da Hui's true identity.

Gradually, those people gave up their search. They believed Da Hui had escaped somewhere else.

Thus, three peaceful years passed. Since Da Hui remembered that he had been abandoned, he felt great sympathy for those poor abandoned Pet Beasts.

These Pet Beasts generally had flaws of their own.

Take Thunder Pig. He had originally been a Pet Beast capable of unleashing terrifying electric currents, but because something had gone wrong with his electricity-generating organ, he had been abandoned.

Then there was the Chameleon Lizard. His scales could change according to the surrounding colors, allowing him to remain invisible at all times. He was greatly favored by some Pet Beast Masters, but unfortunately, he too had developed a problem and could no longer turn invisible, so he was abandoned.

Pet Beast Masters needed an item called Water of the Styx to dissolve a contract.

But when Ye Bai looked at the Lightning Cat, he suddenly froze.
