In the previous World War, Germany had relied on its formidable military strength to defeat the old great powers one after another, replacing the British Empire as the world hegemon. Now, after twenty years of recuperation and growth, Germany's military strength had not weakened in the slightest; it had instead become even more powerful. The overwhelming military force they displayed on the first day of the war had shocked every other nation.
The moment the war began, the German military used its powerful air force to launch massive bombing raids on airfields in western Russia, destroying nearly all of them. Although it still had large numbers of aircraft deployed elsewhere, the German Air Force's formidable combat power had frightened them badly. Before they found a way to counter the German Air Force, Russian Air Force commanders had no wish to send their pilots to their deaths for nothing.
