Although German Americans made up no small portion of the United States' total population, after the war broke out, many had realized that a war between the United States and Germany was likely unavoidable. Thus, to avoid persecution after war began, many German Americans had left the United States and returned to Germany. There were not many German Americans still remaining in the United States.
