"Quick! Quick! Keep up!" A unit of Polish soldiers marched through the streets of Moscow, ordered to reinforce another Polish force.
After the armies of Germany's many protectorates and vassal states began entering Moscow to fight, the battle became even more brutal. Or rather, casualties on the German side began rising without end. Of course, those dying were mainly soldiers from those vassal states. The elite German military still suffered relatively few losses.
"Rat-tat-tat!"
On one street, several dozen Polish soldiers were holding back a Russian attack. Half an hour earlier, an Infantry Company from the Polish 1st Army Corps had captured this place. But soon afterward, they came under a fierce assault from a Russian battalion. Now, less than a third of the entire company remained.
Relying on the interlocking fire of two heavy machine guns, the Polish troops sealed off the street. A thick layer of corpses had already piled up before their defensive line. Those bodies had all been left behind by Russians.
"Company Commander, there are too many Russians! We're running out of ammunition!" a lieutenant platoon commander reported.
"I know. Hold on a little longer. Our reinforcements will be here soon!" Though the Captain was equally anxious, he knew they could not retreat lightly. Once they withdrew, retaking this position would likely cost them even greater casualties.
"Tell everyone to hold on a little longer. Reinforcements will arrive soon. I've requested fire support from higher command. Planes will be here shortly to support us," the company commander said.
That immediately lifted the spirits of the Polish soldiers still holding the line.
Although they had suffered heavy losses in battle, German artillery and air force support had undoubtedly been substantial. Otherwise, they would likely have paid an even greater price.
"Attack! Kill all those Poles!" ordered
