A massive fleet was sailing south through the Eastern Atlantic. It was the German Home Fleet, which had set out from the German homeland. Eight Capital Ships and eight aircraft carriers, divided into separate formations and escorted by cruisers and destroyers, were speeding southward.
"Your Excellency, we are only two days' sailing from the northern waters of the Azores. An hour ago, a seaplane that took off from the Azores flew directly over our heads," Lieutenant General Karl Wetzell reported.
Marshal Lütjens nodded. They were now not far from the Azores. Before long, they would enter the strike range of the Azores' land-based aircraft. That would provide the fleet with far greater security. After all, the Home Fleet was formidable in its own right. With the support of more than a thousand combat aircraft stationed on the Azores, it would even possess the strength to face the entire American fleet head-on.
"Keep watch on the surrounding waters!" Marshal Lütjens ordered.
Although they were about to reach the Azores, they still could not let their guard down. Otherwise, if the American fleet launched a surprise attack, they would be in deep trouble.
Marshal Lütjens did not know whether the American fleet had the nerve to ambush them. Of course, the possibility was very low. The time needed for the American fleet to sail from the United States East Coast to the Azores was no less than the time needed for them to sail from the German homeland to the Azores. However, the American fleet should know that the German Navy had already deployed heavy forces in the Azores. If they wanted to fight a decisive battle with the German Navy in the waters around the Azores, their chances of victory would not be high.
"Yes, Your Excellency!" Lieutenant General Karl Wetzell
