While fighters taking off from the Azores attacked the American Capital Ships formation, attacking the American Navy's Aircraft Carrier Formation had become the foremost task of the Aircraft Carrier Formations of the three German Navy fleets. Even wiping out the entire American Navy Capital Ships formation would not count as victory in this naval battle.
