Although Moscow and Yuzefgrad were both important major cities in Russia, and the Russian military had stationed heavy forces in both cities, preparing for a long time and fortifying them until they were as impregnable as iron buckets.
With the German military's formidable attacking power, however, capturing these two cities and wiping out the Russian forces entrenched within them would not be much of a problem. Previously, the German military had deliberately eased the intensity of its attacks. On one hand, this was to reduce troop casualties. On the other, it was to lure more of the Russian military's living strength into these two cities and annihilate them.
After more than a month of urban siege warfare, the German military had already achieved considerable results. Under such circumstances, the German military could only alter its plans, quicken the pace of its offensive, and accelerate the destruction of the Russian forces entrenched in Moscow and Yuzefgrad. Then it could prepare to destroy Russia as soon as possible.
"Your Majesty, we did not previously close the encirclement around Moscow and Yuzefgrad. If we are to wipe out the Russian forces in these two cities, we must first seal the encirclement," Field Marshal Manstein said.
