"General, an urgent dispatch from Maine!" Major General Eisenhower entered General Marshall's office, his face deathly pale.

"What is it?" General Marshall asked. Without even thinking, he knew that more bad news must have arrived from Maine.

"General, all the defenders in Maine have been wiped out by the Germans. Many units surrendered to them voluntarily. They had no ammunition, no food, and no hope. With no road ahead and no way back, they had no choice but to raise their hands to the Germans." Major General Eisenhower looked utterly dejected.

As a key general of the Army General Staff, he knew the current state of the US military all too well. Under the fierce German offensive, the US military had already suffered catastrophic losses. Every front was being routed. More and more units were being lost, while the casualties they inflicted on the German military were minimal. Everyone knew perfectly well what the outcome would be if this continued.

General Marshall also fell silent. Ten elite army corps—those had been the US military's very foundation. Although the total strength of the US military had expanded to eight million men, losing ten army corps amounted to only a quarter of that. But elite troops and raw recruits were fundamentally different.

"Order the 24th Army Corps, the 25th Army Corps, and the troops in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island to retreat to New Jersey," General Marshall ordered.

After Army Group B annihilated the US forces in Maine, it would certainly ride the momentum southward. The US troops stationed in those areas simply had no strength to contend with the German military. There was likely only one possible outcome: they would be easily wiped out by the Germans. Rather than let that happen, they might as well retreat proactively.
