Lu Xing had nothing to say. Common sense in this other world differed greatly from Earth's. A simple sentence or gesture could expose the fact that he was not Miss Anne.
The green-eyed maid's voice softened again. "Miss Anne, please get up and get dressed first. I'll send someone to inform the professors that they needn't come teach you today."
"Okay!"
Lu Xing breathed a sigh of relief. No matter what, he had managed to muddle through.
After getting out of bed, the head maid crouched down to put on his shoes, then led him before the vanity mirror. The maids skillfully came forward to undo his silk nightgown. Once it was removed, Miss Anne's delicate, slender body appeared in the mirror. The girl's pale, noble, beautiful figure and long, fair legs made Lu Xing quickly shut his eyes and let them fuss over him.
He had wanted to say that he could dress himself, but when he saw the clothes and jewelry held by the seven or eight personal maids, he decisively abandoned that thought.
"Would you like to rest today?"
The head maid gently asked as she combed her hair.
"Mm."
"There's a concert this afternoon. You arranged to attend with Miss Meriel and the others."
"Help me decline that too!"
Lu Xing hurriedly said.
The head maid agreed.
After the luxurious dress was put on and her golden hair was combed, several maids stepped back. One of them came forward holding a box. Lu Xing looked inside and saw over a dozen gemstone accessories glowing faintly. They seemed to be magical accessories unique to this world, meant to complement her outfit.
Lu Xing casually chose a necklace and held it in his hand, but the maid took it from him and put it on for him.
Catherine looked at Miss Anne Vizeswinton in the mirror. This necklace did not suit her.
"You'll be having breakfast with Madam shortly. This was jewelry Madam gave you last year. She'll be happy if she sees you wearing it."
Catherine selected a hair accessory and handed it to him with a smile.
It was the first time Lu Xing had seen this maid with the cool, aloof temperament smile. He got distracted for a moment, and the hair accessory fell onto the carpet. He bent down to pick it up and handed it back to her.
Catherine's gaze fell upon her chest, and suspicion arose in her heart. Testing her, she said, "You arranged to attend the concert with Miss 'Julia' this afternoon. The elven bard Mr. Noi has traveled to the Northern Territory, and you've been thinking about him for a long time. Do you really want to decline?"
There were elves too?
Lu Xing hesitated. This concert seemed important, but if he went and chatted with her friends, there was a high chance he would be exposed.
That damned Life Experience Game! Why couldn't he talk to Miss Anne? Without any communication, he knew nothing. What the hell was he supposed to experience?
He was basically in prison now!
Seeing that Anne had not questioned the name Julia, Catherine's heart sank. She picked up another accessory from the box, glanced at her, and calmly placed it in her golden hair.
She stepped back two paces. Only when she saw no reaction from the hair accessory did Catherine relax slightly.
After much fussing, the simple yet elegant dress and precious jewelry were finally all in place.
Lu Xing stood up and looked at himself in the mirror—or rather, at Miss Anne's appearance. A flash of amazement passed through his eyes.
This Noble Lady of the Magic World possessed an exquisitely beautiful little face. Her skin had already been fair, but after putting on the magical jewelry, Lu Xing could feel a faint current of magic flowing through her body, making Anne's skin even whiter and more crystalline. Her golden hair was steeped in magic, as though lit by the setting sun, blooming with tiny points of light.
Lu Xing raised his hand. The pigeon-egg-sized sapphire on his finger stirred up a stream of magic that flowed and gathered at his slender, scallion-like fingertips, frightening him into stopping at once.
He did not know magic, but Miss Anne did!
Lu Xing was almost certain that Anne's beautiful, expensive jewelry—her rings, hairpins, necklaces, bracelets, and the like—was not merely decorative. They were inscribed with powerful magic.
Even the colorful pearls set into her unknown leather shoes and the pale blue patterns embroidered on her white stockings contained formidable magical power.
She was practically a walking arsenal!
"Miss Anne?"
Catherine cast her another suspicious look. Had Miss Anne been charmed by her own cuteness in the mirror?
"N-Nothing."
Lu Xing winked at Anne's reflection. Instantly, the image of a lively, cheerful, adorable, mischievous Noble Lady from the Magic World appeared before him, leaving him momentarily dazed.
Miss Anne was not an arsenal.
She was practically a lively little angel!
He truly wondered just how adorable and beautiful the original owner of this body—Anne herself—would be when she controlled her own body and made all sorts of expressions.
Lu Xing was not a pervert. He simply appreciated beauty.
Half an hour later.
After serving the esteemed Madam breakfast alongside the adorable yet strange Miss Anne, Catherine came alone to the Magic Tower and told the mage Miss Philys Esselen about what had happened that morning.
"You suspect Anne has been invaded by an evil spirit?"
Philys, who had been reclining behind her desk, sat upright and asked with a solemn expression.
So-called evil spirits were mages and priests who had lost their bodies for some reason. Their souls wandered the world, constantly seeking to seize a young, healthy body.
Moreover, the weaker the victim's resistance, the easier it was for an evil spirit to possess them. Thus, evil spirits usually bewitched others, causing them to gradually lose their sanity until they willingly allowed the evil spirit to take over their body.
"Yes!"
Catherine detailed Miss Anne's strange behavior that morning, from her expression and speech to her actions. "She became afraid of lessons and lied about being sick. She didn't recognize magical jewelry and seemed not to know how to use magic either. She failed to realize that the Julia I mentioned was a fake name. When she bent down to pick something up, she didn't cover her chest."
Philys's expression turned grave.
Catherine continued, "Fortunately, the Holy Maiden once gave her a blessed accessory. I put it on Miss Anne, but the purifying holy power within it was not triggered."
Accessories from the Church of the Holy Light Goddess possessed the power to purify evil. Ordinary evil spirits dared not approach them. Even if a body had been possessed, an accessory given by the Saintess could suppress the evil spirit's power and call Miss Anne's soul back.
That allowed Philys to relax a little.
After pondering for a while, she said to Catherine, "Go back and bring Anne to the rear garden. I'll observe her carefully with the Eye of the Magic Tower."
Philys was Duke Swinton's family mage, and the Magic Tower stood beside Duke's Castle.
"Thank you, Miss Philys. Miss Anne is fortunate to have an elder like you looking after her."
Catherine bowed to her gratefully.
The previously stern Philys became annoyed. "What are you talking about? Anne and I are good friends. I'm not even a hundred years old yet! According to records of elven customs, I'm still underage!"
Catherine looked at her distinctly elven pointed ears, then at the voluptuous figure beneath her nightgown—a figure elves did not possess. After nodding slightly, she turned and left.
Left behind, Philys vexedly rubbed her messy light green hair. She looked down at herself and sighed. "Do I really not look like an elf at all? Should I dress more elegantly, like elves do?"
She made up her mind to wear formal clothes whenever she met outsiders from now on!
--
Evening.
"Ah!!!"
A girl's scream rang out. The maids in Duke Swinton's Castle and the gardeners tending flowers and plants in the garden all heard the cry of utter shock.
Everyone found it strange, but it did not cause much commotion.
They could tell that it was Miss Anne's scream.
Though it had indeed been a little louder than usual today.
Catherine hurried to her room and soon found Anne sitting in a high-backed chair, holding a sheet of paper covered in writing. Her rosy little face was full of disbelief.
"Miss Anne, what's wrong?"
For some reason, seeing Anne wearing such a shocked expression made Catherine relax. This was the usual Miss Anne!
The Miss Anne from earlier today had been far too strange.
"Dear Catherine!!!"
Anne, with her lovely golden hair, hurriedly waved her over. When Catherine came closer and looked at the paper in her hand, Anne quickly hid it away.
Catherine noticed her little movement. It was obvious—very Anne!
"What happened?"
Catherine asked her.
Anne stared at her with wide eyes and asked, "Catherine, was I strange this morning?"
No, you were strange all day!
Catherine said inwardly.
Anne then extended a slender finger and pointed beneath her skirt. "Did I pull open my skirt and look inside to see, see...?"
She stammered, and her adorable little face blushed crimson.
