Background

Song Chengan's family fled Sanjiao Prefecture after a catastrophic flood. In Lingqiu, they purchased farmland and a three-courtyard residence and opened Song's Restaurant, but Chengan later gambled away the family's assets. His father disappeared while collecting grain, leaving the family to presume him dead. 3

He was raised by Song Zhengxin, Song Mother, and Song Cui. Years later, Old Ancestor Song Qiu revealed that Song Zhengxin had found and adopted him rather than being his biological father; Song Cui nevertheless considers him a true brother. 277 349

After entering cultivation, Chengan rose rapidly from a commoner to a Demon Suppression Envoy. His concern for others remained central to his early work: he sought Monk Ciren's help for An Mingxin's bound Earth Soul and pursued Li Chuan after discovering the latter's use of zombies and disregard for human life. 29 65

Personality

Before cultivating, Chengan was a compulsive gambler who repeatedly broke his promise to Zheng Duo and squandered his family's remaining wealth. His later conduct reflects both regret and restraint: he accepts responsibility for his past behavior rather than placing all blame on others. 13 69

He is practical in combat and distrustful of empty ideals. He uses ambushes, deception, and seized opportunities when necessary, believing survival takes priority over ceremonial fairness. At the same time, he distinguishes this pragmatism from cruelty; he repeatedly acts to protect ordinary people and rejects cultivators who treat mortal lives as expendable. 100 223

Chengan is wary of powerful factions and conditional kindness. He initially joined the Song Family for resources and protection rather than affection, then distanced himself after Song Qiu's betrayal.
