Background

Qinglin Prefecture and the assassination case

Ruan Rong is the daughter of Ruan Liangshun, Prefect of Qinglin Prefecture. When her father is detained at Dali Temple in connection with Ambassador Niu Yongxin's assassination, she initially conceals her identity as “Ruan Gu” and offers Sun Shaozong an alliance: he would pursue the killers while she would help clear her father's name. 3

She reveals her true name at the Ministry of Justice and uses her personal connection with Detective Li Jiuming to secure Sun Shaozong access to the assassins' bodies. She rejects Li Jiuming's attempt to bar her from the morgue solely because she is a woman, though the corpses' stench ultimately overwhelms her. 4 5

While infiltrating a suspect mansion, she is nearly attacked by an assassin. Sun Shaozong kills the attacker by throwing his Gold Thread Great Ring Blade, then leads her into the ensuing battle. The incident deepens her trust and affection for him. 8 9
