Angel clicked her tongue inwardly, astonished that the great pirate noticed by the Tarot Club had died so inexplicably at the hands of bodyguards, nowhere near as "close to High Sequence" as Mr. Hanged Man had described.
And didn't he have a Mystical Item with the abilities of a Shepherd, called Creeping Hunger?
She flipped back to the front page of the Tingen Daily and reread the report word by word, but found nothing new.
But then she considered that the report said Qilangos had failed in his assassination attempt at Duke Negan's dinner last night and died, yet the news had appeared on the front page of a local Tingen City newspaper more than a hundred kilometers away early this morning. There had been very little time to verify the information or conduct follow-up interviews, and it was even possible that the entire story had been delivered by telegraph between the two cities.
Such a hastily assembled report was bound to contain errors or omissions. And an Extraordinary individual close to High Sequence attacking one of the kingdom's highest-ranking nobles would certainly draw the attention of the police and prompt intervention from official organizations like the Nighthawks. Once they sealed off the information, even these news reports might not be trustworthy.
Perhaps Vice Admiral Hurricane had not simply died at the hands of "the duke's bodyguards," as the newspaper claimed. Official Beyonders might have intervened, and it was even possible that one of Mr. Fool's High Sequence Blessed had acted!
Angel decided to ask Mr. Hanged Man and Miss Justice about it at next week's Tarot Club gathering, especially the latter. She lived in Backlund, had access to reliable information, and had once hired a detective to investigate Qilangos. She should know something about the truth of the matter.
