Ch. 81Shadow Lurking

Angel and Clement fought Mr. C, whose shadow abilities and regenerative power made him difficult to injure. After Mr. C nearly killed Clement with an explosion, Clement returned and used 2-031 to forbid Shadow Lurking, leaving Mr. C exposed to Angel’s flames.

  • Angel shot Mr. C with a Demon Hunter Bullet while Clement retreated and emptied his gun, but the attacks failed to stop Mr. C’s regeneration.
  • Clement charged Mr. C in close combat while Angel prepared Bloodthirst, and Mr. C used his spilled blood as explosives to blow Clement into a cloud of blood mist.
  • Angel wounded Mr. C with Bloodthirst, and Black Flame burned his flesh, but he detonated more blood and escaped into a shadow.
  • Angel drew the shadow toward her, preparing to fire a Black Flame-enhanced Phantom Phosphor Eruption, when Clement emerged alive and used 2-031 to forbid Shadow Lurking.
  • Clement’s power pulled Mr. C out of the shadow, and Angel’s golden and purplish-black flames detonated in front of him.

Ch. 82Rose Bishop

Angel and Clement killed Mr. C, the Rose Bishop, but Tomaz shot Angel and escaped before they could pursue him. Angel realized they were in danger, and Tomaz’s bombs began bringing down the cellar ceiling.

  • Angel used Bloodthirst’s Black Flame to burn Mr. C, while Clement forbade his Shadow Lurking and Flesh Bomb abilities.
  • An unseen attacker shot Angel’s arm as she tried to finish Mr. C, but she fired a Mighty Blow with her last Phantom Phosphor Eruption and destroyed him.
  • Clement forbade firearms, revealing Tomaz in the cellar; Tomaz vanished in flames before they could stop him.
  • Angel urged Clement to leave, suspecting Tomaz would use bombs, but Clement stayed to wait for Mr. C’s Beyonder Item.
  • Muffled explosions sounded above them, and moss-covered stone slabs crashed down from the ceiling.

Ch. 83Pocket Watch

Tomaz searched the ruined cellar for a Sealed Artifact, but Angel ambushed him after preventing his Teleportation. Though Tomaz used a Charm to blind her, Angel’s dagger finally struck his real body.

  • Tomaz entered the ruined cellar and found Mr. C’s remains, an unconscious man, and a black revolver, but no sign of the other people.
  • Tomaz tried to escape with Flame Leap when he heard a murmur, but Angel used the Hand of Declaration to prohibit Teleportation and attacked him.
  • Angel’s dagger struck Tomaz’s Paper Figurine Substitute, and she pressed her assault after he reappeared and fired at her.
  • Tomaz used another Paper Figurine Substitute to escape Angel’s strikes, then activated a Charm that blinded her with a burst of light.
  • Angel charged through the blinding light and drove her dagger into Tomaz’s real body.

Ch. 84One-hit Kill

Angel killed Tomaz after using the Hand of Declaration to seal his abilities, then recovered his Mystical Item and helped Clement and Rupert leave the cellar. Clement explained that Tomaz had been a Rose Bishop of the Aurora Order, while Rupert still needed examination for possible contamination from the Evil God Statue.

  • Angel stabbed Tomaz a second time, removed the Hand of Declaration, and used Bloodthirst to drain his blood.
  • Angel found Tomaz's damaged countdown pocket watch and silver Charms, then secured the watch as evidence for the captain.
  • Angel found the injured Clement, who drank Goddess's Gaze and recovered enough to walk.
  • Clement explained that a Rose Bishop belonged to the Aurora Order's Secrets Suppliant pathway and described its dangerous flesh-based abilities.
  • Angel and Clement checked Rupert, who was breathing steadily but might have been contaminated by the Evil God Statue, and helped him up the stairs.

Ch. 85The Missing Corpses

Angel, Clement, and Andrew discovered that Tomaz’s corpse and most of Mr. C’s remains had disappeared from the warehouse cellar. Clement concluded that Mr. C had survived by devouring Tomaz and escaped, while Angel realized Tomaz’s pocket watch had become scorching hot.

  • Angel learned that Clement worked closely with Enmat Harbor’s police because the Nighthawks lacked personnel and needed local support.
  • Andrew reported that Tomaz’s body had vanished, and Angel, Clement, and Andrew returned to the warehouse cellar to investigate.
  • Clement found that Tomaz’s corpse was gone and that roughly two-thirds of Mr. C’s remains had disappeared beneath the rubble.
  • Clement concluded that Mr. C had devoured Tomaz after the battle and escaped, and he said the Red Gloves would be needed to pursue him.
  • Angel said Tomaz could only be reported as missing, then felt his pocket watch grow scorching hot inside her pocket.

Ch. 86Aftermath and Treatment

Angel and Clement returned to the Silver Bullet Detective Agency with Rupert Norman after their battle with the Aurora Order, while Angel secretly kept Tomaz’s pocket watch. Daly treated the injured Nighthawks and warned Angel that Clement had once fallen into fanaticism from overusing the Hand of Declaration.

  • Angel returned Sealed Artifact 2-031, the Hand of Declaration, to Clement but kept Tomaz’s pocket watch hidden in her pocket.
  • Clement and Angel brought the groggy Rupert Norman back to the Silver Bullet Detective Agency while Andrew stayed behind to manage the crime scene.
  • Daly heard that Rupert had seen the True Creator’s statue with his Spirit Vision open and arranged to examine him after treating the injured Nighthawks.
  • Daly used a healing ritual that quickly eased Angel’s arm injury, while Clement remained behind to recover from possible internal injuries.
  • Angel told Daly about the battle and learned that Clement had once become fanatical after using the Hand of Declaration too often.

Ch. 87Departure

Angel left Enmat Harbor for Tingen after the Nighthawks’ investigation, carrying Tomaz’s pocket watch and the gains from her mission. At the station, she met Kavi and revealed that Tomaz was dead, then asked her to appraise the stolen Mystical Item for free.

  • Angel stored Tomaz’s backward-running pocket watch in a box that isolated spirituality.
  • After Rupert recovered, Angel left Enmat Harbor early to catch the Monday Tarot Club meeting in Tingen.
  • At the train station, Angel encountered Kavi, who planned to move to Backlund after Bern’s death and fearing Tomaz.
  • Angel showed Kavi Tomaz’s pocket watch and told her that she had killed him, though his corpse had disappeared.
  • Angel asked Kavi to appraise the Mystical Item for free.

Ch. 88Magician Pocket Watch

Angel returned to Tingen with the Magician Pocket Watch, whose abilities and drawbacks Kavi had explained. At home, she found a note from Tromi requesting leave, then went out for food and planned to greet Klein when he returned.

  • Angel recalled Kavi's appraisal of the pocket watch's three abilities, ten-minute duration, and twelve-hour Fear of Firelight drawback.
  • Angel named the item the Magician Pocket Watch and restrained herself from testing it on the crowded train.
  • Angel arrived in Tingen, avoided a pickpocket, and returned to her home on Daffodil Street.
  • Angel found Tromi's note explaining that her father had died and that she needed leave, then decided to raise Tromi's wages.
  • Angel went out to look for food, saw that the Moretti Family was not home, and planned to greet Klein that evening.

Ch. 89An Anomaly Above the Gray Fog

At the Tarot Club, Angel realized that memories of an entire day had appeared in her mind despite her having no recollection of it, and she sought an explanation for possible memory-altering abilities. The meeting ended with Angel raising a new question about the Aurora Order.

  • The Fool convened the Tarot Club, where Angel arrived trembling and dizzy after recovering memories of a day she had forgotten.
  • Angel recalled a sequence of events in Enmat Harbor and realized that an entire day of her memories had vanished, though she still could not recall the details.
  • Angel asked Justice and Hanged Man whether Beyonders could alter or conceal memories, and Hanged Man said the ability might require a Sequence 4 Spectator.
  • Justice asked about finding the Psychology Alchemists and the Telepathist potion formula, and Hanged Man advised her to focus on digesting her current potion.
  • Angel suggested that acting according to a role could let Justice advance faster, then asked the others whether they knew about the Aurora Order.

Ch. 90Prayer in the Night

Angel discussed the Aurora Order with Justice and The Hanged Man at the Tarot Club, then recorded memories recovered on The Lost Day. Seeking a clearer image of the mysterious Priest, she prayed to the Evernight Goddess, but the sketch turned completely blank.

  • Angel told Justice and The Hanged Man that Aurora Order believers in Enmat Harbor had been implicated in kidnappings and human trafficking, and The Hanged Man asked whether she had visited the harbor.
  • Justice offered five hundred pounds each for information about secret organizations and ancient faiths.
  • Back in her study, Angel wrote down the memories she had recovered above the Gray Fog and stored them in her desk.
  • Angel tried to sketch the Priest from memory but could not recall his face, so she decided to ask the Evernight Goddess for help.
  • During Angel's prayer, the cardstock floated above the altar, and after the candles went out, it drifted back to her completely blank.

Ch. 91Klein's Suspicion

Angel received a vague response after praying to the Goddess about someone who might have altered her memories, then tested the abilities of her Magician Pocket Watch. Klein heard a sound resembling her Flame Leap and continued investigating whether Angel Granger was Miss “Empress,” leaving the identification uncertain.

  • Angel examined the blank sketch paper and worried that a powerful Beyonder might have altered her memories.
  • Angel decided to test the Magician Pocket Watch and learned its Flame Leap, Damage Transfer, and Paper Figurine Substitute abilities.
  • Angel used Flame Leap to teleport to a streetlamp outside her home.
  • Klein heard the disturbance, checked the street, and returned to his desk after the lamps settled.
  • Klein compared Angel Granger with Miss “Empress,” marked the evidence as uncertain, and planned to test her in person.

Ch. 92Fear of Firelight and a Test

After returning from Enmat Harbor, Angel was temporarily terrified of firelight because of the Magician Pocket Watch, but the effect wore off at Blackthorn Security Company. She went to report to Dunn Smith while Klein reflected on her refusal to meet Monday afternoon.

  • Angel hesitated to enter Blackthorn Security Company because a gas lamp in the stairwell frightened her, and Klein found her outside.
  • Klein and Rozanne extinguished the gas lamps and stove flame so Angel could enter the reception hall without fear.
  • Angel waited for the Magician Pocket Watch's countdown to end, then tested a gas lamp and discovered that she no longer feared firelight.
  • Klein told Angel that Dunn Smith wanted to see her about a telegram from Enmat Harbor, and Angel thanked him for helping her.
  • Klein invited Angel to meet Monday afternoon, but she declined because she had another commitment and suggested the evening instead.
  • Angel entered Dunn Smith's office while Klein remained outside, lost in thought.

Ch. 93Report and "Acting"

Angel reported on the Enmat Harbor battle to Dunn, who praised her work and invited her to a dinner celebrating her and Klein’s successful trials. Their discussion of Daly’s rapid advancement led Angel to infer the Acting Method and give Dunn a clue about mastering his Nightmare potion.

  • Dunn read Bell Clement’s praise of Angel’s role in the Enmat Harbor battle, and Angel explained how the Nighthawks had organized the operation.
  • Angel and Dunn discussed the Hand of Declaration and the Saint Relics, then read a letter of thanks from the Machinery Hivemind concerning Kavi and Tomaz.
  • Dunn told Angel that her performance had fulfilled her trial and invited her to dinner with the team, where they would also celebrate Klein’s completed trial.
  • Dunn explained that Daly had advanced unusually quickly and had been transferred to the Backlund Diocese after applying to advance to Sequence 6.
  • Angel connected Daly’s advice to Dunn with the Acting Method and suggested that a Beyonder should embody the role represented by their potion’s name.
  • Dunn pondered Angel’s suggestion as she quietly left his office.

Ch. 94Dinner Gathering

At the Blackthorn Security Company’s welcome dinner, Angel and Klein settled in among their colleagues, and Klein struggled to eat after his brutal training. Later, Klein used the Grey Fog to confirm that Angel was the Tarot Club’s Miss Empress, and his dream revealed her secretly eating the noodles meant as an offering to the Fool.

  • Dunn toasted Angel Granger and Klein Moretti at the welcome dinner, and the team raised their glasses to the two new members.
  • Leonard asked Angel about her fight with Mr. C, while Klein slowly regained his appetite with help from Seeka Tron’s ice cream.
  • Klein returned home aching, reviewed his suspicions about Angel, and failed to determine her identity with a pendulum divination.
  • Klein went to the Grey Fog and dreamed of Miss Empress removing her hood and eating the Feneboote Noodles she had meant to offer the Fool.
  • Klein recognized Miss Empress as Angel Granger.

Ch. 95Death List

Angel and Klein joined Leonard to investigate a surge of suspicious deaths in Tingen after the Police Department transferred the Nighthawks a set of death reports. They arrived at Shady Avenue to begin examining the cases, while the cause and purpose of the deaths remained unknown.

  • Angel reflected on her first week as a Nighthawk and her continued failure to find a way back to Earth.
  • Leonard brought Angel and Klein nearly thirty death reports covering a sharp rise in abnormal deaths across Tingen.
  • Leonard explained that the deaths had exceeded normal levels more than fourfold and that the captain had assigned Angel and Klein to investigate with divination and ritual magic.
  • Angel and Klein accompanied Leonard by carriage, discussing possible patterns and motives behind the deaths.
  • The carriage arrived at Shady Avenue in the West Borough.

Ch. 96"Suicide"

Leonard, Klein, and Angel examined the evidence and testimony from Lawrence’s public suicide, questioning whether Beyonder forces had influenced him. They found no clear explanation and ended by asking George III through divination whether Beyonder factors had caused Lawrence’s death.

  • Leonard brought Klein and Angel to the police station to collect evidence and hear Officer Dean’s account of Lawrence’s death.
  • Dean said Lawrence had denounced former mayor Dennis over debts linked to his bankrupt steel factory before shooting himself in public.
  • Angel examined the new revolver and noted that it contained three spent casings, while Klein learned Lawrence had sent his wife and daughter to Winter County before his death.
  • The three investigators discussed Lawrence’s apparent rationality and whether the mayor or a Beyonder influence had driven his actions.
  • Klein divined whether Beyonder factors had influenced Lawrence’s death.

Ch. 97Approaching Truth

Angel, Klein, and Leonard investigated a series of deaths and discovered that Beyonders had instigated several victims to commit crimes that ended in their own deaths. After checking the West Borough, they headed to Iron Cross Street to investigate another group of deaths.

  • Klein’s first divination indicated that Lawrence’s death had no supernatural cause, but Angel suggested a Beyonder could have incited him without using supernatural abilities.
  • Klein divined that Lawrence’s death was related to a Beyonder, and Leonard concluded an Instigator had driven him to commit public suicide through conversation.
  • Leonard borrowed Lawrence’s pistol and banner from Dean, and the group visited crime scenes and evidence sites to investigate further deaths.
  • Klein confirmed that five of seven deaths were related to Beyonders, with each case involving an instigated crime that ended in the victim’s death.
  • Leonard directed Angel to mark the deaths on a map and led the group toward Iron Cross Street while Klein rested during the carriage ride.

Ch. 98The Dead Man of Lower Street

Klein, Leonard, and Angel investigated the death of Val Ellison at his home on Iron Cross Street, where they discovered Angel knew Val’s daughter, Tromi. Klein used Dream Divination to glimpse Val’s final days and death, but the chapter left the cause and circumstances of his death unresolved.

  • Leonard led Klein and Angel through Iron Cross Street to Val Ellison’s apartment and identified himself as a police inspector.
  • Tromi recognized Angel as someone she had known through her former work and confirmed that Val was her father, buried ten days earlier.
  • Tromi described finding Val dead in bed after he returned home clutching his chest, and Leonard asked her to remake the bed with Val’s bedding.
  • Angel sealed the bedroom with a Wall of Spirituality, and Klein attempted Dream Divination using the washed bedding.
  • Klein’s dream showed Val carrying goods, arguing with a fishmonger, worrying about his children, being tapped from behind, and collapsing in pain under crimson moonlight.

Ch. 99Clues of Curse

Klein, Angel, and Leonard concluded that a Witch was using the deaths of people already near the ends of their lives for a larger supernatural purpose. After Leonard revealed his suspicions about their abilities and proposed an alliance, the three agreed to keep one another’s secrets and set out to locate the ritual site.

  • Klein used divination to confirm that Val Ellison’s heart attack had been influenced by supernatural forces, and Angel suggested that a Witch might be behind the deaths and Instigation cases.
  • Leonard proposed that the Witch was stealing the victims’ remaining lives as materials for a sacrifice, curse, or other supernatural scheme.
  • Leonard urged Klein to use the victims’ belongings and divination to find the ritual site, and he revealed that he suspected Klein and Angel had unusual abilities of their own.
  • Angel and Klein agreed to form an alliance with Leonard on the condition that they would not pry into one another’s secrets or expose their special circumstances to their superiors.
  • Klein said he could locate the altar through divination and proposed going to his home to gather the victims’ belongings, but Leonard found that the Wall of Spirituality still blocked the door.

Ch. 100Curse Altar

Angel, Klein, and Leonard used Klein’s divination and clues about the murders to narrow down the location of the altar. They concluded it was in the southwest West Borough, near the west bank of the Tussock River, and set out to search for it.

  • Angel brought Klein and Leonard to her home after they avoided Klein’s sister Melissa, and Klein performed a divination in her study.
  • Klein described a gray-blue two-story house beside either the Khoy River or the Tussock River, surrounded by a gloomy garden.
  • Angel used the sun’s position and the building’s shadow to rule out the east bank of the Tussock River and locations along the Khoy River.
  • Klein ruled out the Docklands, while Leonard explained that the killer had likely moved from the South Borough to the West Borough as victims became scarce.
  • Angel marked a search area in the southwest West Borough beside the west bank of the Tussock River, and the three left to find the altar.
