Background / History
Jinbe served as a soldier of Ryugu Palace before joining Fisher Tiger. After Fisher Tiger formed the Sun Pirates, Jinbe became one of his followers; following Fisher Tiger’s death, he became the crew’s captain. His former comrade Arlong later rejected Jinbe’s opposition to ruling humans through fear, leading Jinbe to defeat him and sever their relationship while still sparing him because of their shared past. 11 26
The World Government approached Jinbe with an offer to become a Shichibukai. He considered the position as a means to protect Fish-Man Island and secure the release of captured comrades, despite questioning whether Fisher Tiger would have approved. 11
After Bright’s release from Marine captivity, Jinbe reunited with him in the Fish-Man District. He viewed Bright—who had followed the Sun Pirates from childhood—as a younger brother, protected him from Marine retaliation, and personally began teaching him Haki and Fish-Man Karate. 18 24 25
As Bright rose to lead the Fish-Man District and establish the Immigration Bureau, Jinbe became his principal instructor, adviser, and military partner. He helped turn former street delinquents into disciplined defenders, trained the bureau’s officers, and supported the effort to build a force capable of protecting Fish-Man Island. 37 41 49
By the time Bright returned from training with Rayleigh, Jinbe acknowledged that Bright had surpassed him. Bright then passed Rayleigh’s advanced Haki teachings on to Jinbe, allowing Jinbe to further develop his own Haki. 138
