From high above, the land below was filled with sugarcane, citrus, and cotton plantations that had been burned and brutally stripped bare. This vast plantation had long since developed into a fully functional town.

Sugar mills, warehouses, pastures—one plantation structure after another had been seized by the Black rebels.

Gunfire rang out without pause. From time to time, Black men dragged out corpses and piled them into the trenches nearby.

At the plantation entrance stood gallows bearing the bodies of escaped slaves. Black slaves who had once been inspired by news of the "uprising army" and planned to rise against their masters had now been replaced by rebellious whites.

The whites who were brutally executed accounted for only a third of the town's residents. More were tied up, driven into cages, and reduced to white slaves—common in the Middle Ages, but exceedingly rare nowadays.
