Fang Li's massacre stirred both shock and hope among the onlookers.
Originally, the samurai's Steam Guns could only slightly delay the Kabane's advance, utterly ineffective for direct combat. But with Fang Li's slaughter, the Kabane's assault slowed considerably.
Because he fought at the very front, nearly all the Kabane eventually fixed their sights on Fang Li, howling as they closed in around him.
Surrounded by hundreds of Kabane like this, if Fang Li were alone—even with the Slayer's boost to attack and movement speed—he would have been torn to shreds in an instant.
Fortunately, Mumei's suppressive fire never let up.
Her precise shots made each Kabane falter just as it reached Fang Li, and then his Dagger would pierce its heart, driving through cleanly.
Mumei seemed to understand that rather than wasting energy on multiple shots to the same spot to break through a Kabane's heart, it was more efficient to provide support and let Fang Li finish them off. So she poured all her focus into covering him, letting him do the killing.
Of course, with the sheer number of Kabane, this plan couldn't be fully realized.
Fang Li's strength had its limits. When multiple Kabane attacked at once, even if he seized the moment from Mumei's suppressive fire to strike, one or two would inevitably slip through.
Those Kabane fell to Mumei.
So while Fang Li seemed to carve through the Kabane horde with thrilling ferocity, stunning everyone, the true hero behind this feat was Mumei.
The samurai gradually caught on. Though still amazed that Fang Li could pierce a Kabane's heart membrane, they took action.
"Everyone!" Kurusu Kunoichi ordered without hesitation.
"Support that fool charging into the monster horde!"
Under Kurusu Kunoichi's command, all the samurai joined Mumei in suppressive fire.
This eased Mumei's burden, and Fang Li's slaughter grew even smoother, completely halting the Kabane army.
But this state of affairs didn't last long.
"Bang—!"
With a sound like shattering glass, another Kabane's heart lost its light, and the grotesque monster slowly collapsed.
Yet in that same instant, Fang Li suddenly stopped.
"Ha... ha... ha..."
Ragged breaths escaped Fang Li.
He was panting.
His chest heaved violently, his Ice-Blue Demon Eyes still gleaming, but the hand gripping his Dagger trembled.
Perhaps on Earth, no one had ever experienced this feeling.
The sensation of killing until one's hands grew weak.
That was Fang Li's state now.
But it wasn't just the sheer volume of slaughter that made him stop.
The reason was obvious.
"Not good!" Kurusu Kunoichi's face changed, and he shouted, "That guy's stamina is almost spent!"
Kibito Aragane and the samurai's expressions shifted too.
As for Fang Li, he kept breathing heavily, gripping his Dagger with effort, his Ice-Blue Demon Eyes scanning his surroundings.
"Ah—!"
"Ooh—!"
"Ee—!"
One by one, the Kabane closed in like beasts cornering their prey, their eyes gleaming with malice, step by step toward Fang Li.
This time, he was completely surrounded.
"W-What do we do?" Ikoma, still rooted in place and not on the train, saw Fang Li encircled by the Kabane army and called out urgently to Mumei. "Think of something..."
Before he could finish, Ikoma fell silent.
Because he saw that Mumei was in the same state.
"Ha... ha... ha..."
With breaths even more labored than Fang Li's, Mumei's hand on her Steam Gun trembled too, her eyes filled with deep exhaustion.
"W-What's wrong with you?" Ikoma asked, startled.
Mumei ignored him, propping up her weakening body. Gazing at Fang Li surrounded by Kabane, she gritted her teeth and muttered, "Is this the limit?"
Yes.
The limit.
Both Fang Li and Mumei had reached theirs.
"No way..." Ikoma's expression twisted.
But Fang Li, deep in the monster horde, watched the Kabane closing in. Though he panted, his face was eerily calm.
"This is exactly why I prepared a tool for this moment."
Fang Li reached his hand toward his leg pouch.
Yet, in the next second, Fang Li's hand abruptly stopped.
"Toot-toot-toot-toot-toot—!"
Accompanied by a loud whistle, everyone present was momentarily stunned, then overjoyed.
Immediately after, they all saw it.
The steel train parked in the garage finally began to move, slowly rolling out from within.
"Everyone!"
At the head of the Iron Fortress, Yomogawa Ayame poked half her body out from the opened roof hatch, waving at everyone.
Seeing this, Kurusu Kunoichi turned his head and shouted at Fang Li: "Hurry back! The retreat is starting!"
Fang Li didn't need Kurusu Kunoichi's reminder to act.
Squeezing the last shred of strength from his body, Fang Li charged fiercely toward the direction of the Iron Fortress.
The surrounding Kabane let out a chorus of roars, lunging at Fang Li without hesitation.
"Bang-bang-bang-bang-bang—!"
The chaotic sound of gunfire rang out once more, shooting down each Kabane that pounced toward Fang Li.
The first to fire was still Mumei.
As for the samurai of the Yotsuyu Clan, some stayed in place, continuing to shoot to help Fang Li escape, while others fled directly toward the Iron Fortress.
Still, even so, it was enough.
Under everyone's cover, Fang Li charged straight ahead.
Just as Fang Li was about to break free from the Kabane's encirclement, a hand suddenly grabbed his foot.
"—?!"
Fang Li's heart tightened. He forcefully lowered his head to look beneath him.
There, a Kabane that had just been shot down lay on the ground, extending a hand and gripping Fang Li's ankle tightly.
"Aaaaah—!"
With a violent roar, the Kabane lying on the ground opened its mouth and bit down toward Fang Li's foot.
"Squelch—!"
Blood splattered.
