Chiba's pupils slowly contracted. His gaze was no longer on the letter itself, but on the shadow cast beneath it onto the table by the sunlight.
At that moment, within the letter's pitch-black shadow, characters resembling coded symbols made up of tiny points of light appeared.
There were only a few of them, but they clearly formed a message.
However, the message was written in code, and it was not one of the official Konoha codes he knew. Nor had he been close enough to Hyuga Shinsuke to create a private code known only to the two of them. Chiba had no idea what it meant.
Was this a secret message left for me? Lowering his head and raising the envelope to see the glowing symbols within the shadow more clearly, Chiba frowned as a trace of doubt crossed his mind.
This coded message was clearly a secret left by Hyuga Shinsuke, hidden within the letter. Since the letter had been left for Chiba, the secret message should naturally have been intended for him as well.
Yet that did not make sense.
If it had been left for Chiba, secrecy was one thing—but why encode it? And if it was encoded, why use a code Chiba did not know? It almost seemed as though Hyuga Shinsuke did not want Chiba to learn this message.
Or rather, perhaps the message had not been left for Chiba at all.
That was clearly contradictory.
What was Hyuga Shinsuke trying to do? He had never struck Chiba as someone so mysterious and cryptic! Besides, what he had openly written in the letter made it clear that he had been completely frank with Chiba, with no intention of concealing anything.
So why had he set up such a code, along
