Background and History
Loki grows up as Odin and Frigga’s son and Thor’s brother. Frigga teaches him magic, but Loki resents Thor’s popularity and Odin’s attention to him. After learning that he is Laufey’s son rather than Odin’s biological child, he interprets his exclusion from the throne as a consequence of his Frost Giant origins 88 121 123.
Seeking both revenge on Laufey and proof of his loyalty to Asgard, Loki leads Frost Giants into Asgard, then kills Laufey before the sleeping Odin can be struck. He activates the Bifrost against Jotunheim, declaring that destroying the Frost Giants will establish him as Odin’s true heir. Harry and Thor oppose him. When he cannot win, Loki jumps from the Bifrost into a wormhole, promising to return after making a name for himself elsewhere 120 121 123.
Loki later steals the Tesseract, controls S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel, and plans to bring the Chitauri to Earth. The Avengers capture him, but Mephisto takes him from confinement. At Stark Tower, Loki helps open the Portal above New York; Harry recaptures him and forces him to drink the potion that changes his body 152 153 154 156 159 161.
Appearance
Loki’s appearance changes after Harry administers the Witch’s Potion. In Asgard’s prison, he is described in his transformed form 161 208.
- Original form — Wears Asgardian armor during the confrontation in Odin’s palace 120.
- Frost Giant form — Can reveal ice-blue skin 153.
- Transformed form — Has silver hair, delicate features, and a cold demeanor; Loki demands that Harry change him back 208.
Personality
Loki is proud of his title, strategic ability, and claim to Asgard’s throne. He demands deference from people he considers beneath him, but treats Harry as a serious rival because of Harry’s power and connection to the Supreme Mage. He repeatedly underestimates how much stronger Harry has become 85 88 153.
His schemes coexist with attachment to his family. He hesitates to kill Thor, reacts with concern when he mistakes Steve’s borrowed lightning runes for Thor’s, and apologizes to Frigga before leaving Asgard. He also declines to drink Mephisto’s soul-based wine, despite its promised magical benefit 116 123 153 159.
