Background / History

Tony Stark is discovered as a captive of the Ten Rings Gang in a cave filled with mechanical parts, missile remnants, and unfinished equipment. He is held alongside Yinsen and has developed cold-fusion technology while preparing an improvised Iron Man suit for their escape. Harry Potter unexpectedly arrives in the cave through unstable Space Magic, recognizes Tony, and helps the prisoners break out. 30 31 32

Harry’s magic changes Tony’s priorities. After learning that threats such as Dormammu and other Dimensional Demons exist, Tony decides that conventional armor alone is insufficient to protect Earth and asks to learn magic. Harry provides introductory magic books, a Sling Ring, and access to his magic-lending arrangement. 34 38

His captivity also forces Tony to confront the consequences of Stark Industries’ weapons. Having witnessed terrorists kill children with weapons his company produced, he shuts down the weapons-manufacturing division despite the financial cost and commits himself to protecting people as Iron Man. He transfers 5% of Stark Industries’ shares to Harry in gratitude for saving him and in recognition of their growing partnership. 38 39

Tony initially refuses to believe that Obadiah Stane—his father’s friend and a trusted elder—could be responsible for his kidnapping.
