Ch. 21Voyage

Sixteen-year-old Marcel worked aboard a merchant ship to support his family after pirates killed his father, while Xia Qiu followed the vessel through the sea to find a safe route to another island. The chapter left Xia Qiu trailing the ship toward its next destination.

  • Marcel told Uncle Joezer that he intended to work hard and avenge his father by killing pirates.
  • Joezer let Marcel try rum, and Marcel coughed after gulping down too much.
  • Kafur spotted a strange fish nearly twenty meters long following the merchant ship, and Marcel whistled toward it.
  • Xia Qiu heard Marcel’s whistle and continued following the ship, hoping it would lead him to a smaller island while helping him avoid Sea Kings and Marines.

Ch. 22Attack

Xia Qiu hunted a large fish to satisfy his hunger, then returned to the merchant ship he had been following. The crew spotted a pirate ship approaching and learned it belonged to the Dominic Pirates, who had killed Marcel’s father.

  • Xia Qiu dove beneath the merchant ship and swallowed a few small fish, then sensed a much larger fish nearby.
  • Xia Qiu chased and killed the fifteen-meter fish, eating nearly three tons of it before catching up to the ship.
  • Marcel noticed that Xia Qiu had returned and wondered why the fish had followed the ship for hours.
  • A lookout spotted a pirate ship approaching, and the crew prepared to evade it.
  • Joezer identified the approaching crew as the Dominic Pirates, prompting Marcel to remember that they had killed his father.

Ch. 23Hunting

Marcel confronted the Dominic Pirates’ leader, Dominic, who spared the merchant ship after taking its money and liquor, then plotted to rob it again. As Dominic ordered his crew to kill Marcel next time, Black Fish rammed their pirate ship and tore open its hull.

  • The merchant ship’s captain chose to surrender money and liquor to the approaching Dominic Pirates rather than flee.
  • Dominic recognized the captain and accepted their money and liquor, while warning Marcel after noticing his hostile stare.
  • After the pirates left, the captain reprimanded Marcel for risking everyone’s lives by showing his hatred.
  • Aboard the pirate ship, Dominic revealed he planned to ambush the merchant ship in seven or eight days and ordered his crew to kill Marcel.
  • Black Fish struck the pirate ship, smashing its hull and leaving a massive hole.

Ch. 24Sunken Ship

Xia Qiu repeatedly rammed the Dominic Pirates’ ship, flooding four compartments until it began to sink. Dominic ordered the pirates to abandon ship and planned to escape with a select few, leaving the others behind as bait.

  • After the first collision flooded one compartment, Josen organized repairs while Dominic ordered the sails lowered.
  • Xia Qiu struck the ship again, breaking through its hull, and Dominic ordered the crew to attack him with harpoons and cannons.
  • The merchant ship’s crew spotted the pirates’ trouble and changed course to avoid them.
  • Xia Qiu dodged the cannon fire and made two more breaches, flooding four compartments and causing the pirate ship to sink.
  • Dominic ordered the boats lowered and chose who could escape, allowing Josen to come while leaving the remaining pirates as bait.

Ch. 25Overwhelming Force

Dominic abandoned most of his crew as the pirate ship sank, then led the survivors toward a nearby village. Xia Qiu caught up and destroyed their boats, killing Dominic and leaving the remaining pirates fleeing for their lives.

  • Dominic selected a dozen men to board the small boat and used Johansen’s musket to stop the others from crowding aboard as the pirate ship sank.
  • The stranded pirates fought over floating debris while Dominic’s group rowed away, and Old Josen directed them toward a nearby village.
  • Xia Qiu caught up with the boats, smashed one, and swallowed pirates who had fallen into the sea.
  • Johansen fired at Xia Qiu while Dominic and Leo attacked him with blades, but their weapons barely damaged his scales.
  • Xia Qiu shattered Dominic’s boat, injured Dominic and Leo, and swallowed Dominic after he fell into the water.

Ch. 26Wails and Laughter

Xia Qiu destroyed the Dominic Pirates, devoured their crew, and then followed the merchant ship without attacking it. Marcel and the others believed Xia Qiu had avenged them, while Xia Qiu waited for his strengthening to finish before continuing toward the next island.

  • Marcel watched Dominic escape the sinking pirate ship, but Xia Qiu smashed his boat and devoured him.
  • Xia Qiu hunted down Leo and Johansen, then ate the remaining pirates near the wreck.
  • Marcel and Joezer recognized Xia Qiu as the sea fish that had followed their ship, and the captain tried to flee when it approached.
  • Xia Qiu caught up with the merchant ship but swam alongside it while waiting for the warm current to strengthen him.
  • Marcel thanked Xia Qiu for avenging them, and Xia Qiu splashed the crew before diving deeper.

Ch. 27Departure

Marcel and the crew bid farewell to Black Fish, while Xia Qiu chose a new habitat and fought off a pack of Great White Sharks. The chapter ended with a prisoner leaving Impel Down aboard a pirate ship, foreshadowing that he would become Xia Qiu’s strongest enemy.

  • Marcel, Captain Joezer, Kafur, and the others watched Black Fish disappear before unloading their cargo at port.
  • Xia Qiu explored a large island and settled on the deep southern waters as his next habitat.
  • A pack of Great White Sharks attacked Xia Qiu, who killed several and drove the rest away.
  • Xia Qiu planned to make the area his territory and grow there while avoiding humans and powerful threats.
  • A prisoner left Impel Down on a pirate ship, and the prisoner resolved not to become like the pirates waiting for him.
  • The newly released prisoner confronted the ship’s leading figure, and Xia Qiu’s peaceful life was foreshadowed to end when the prisoner became his strongest enemy.

Ch. 28Marine Officers

Marine officers searched for the fish that killed Captain Lido, but Vice Admiral Bastille abandoned the hunt and returned to base. Meanwhile, Xia Qiu established a hunting ground underwater and spotted a pod of dolphins near the island.

  • Kurume urged Colonel Lester to keep searching for the fish, but Vice Admiral Bastille said he had no time to waste and ordered the Marines back to base.
  • Lester explained Bastille's reputation and discussed Storobelli's promotion, his attack on Fisher Tiger, and Jinbe becoming a Shichibukai.
  • Lester recognized Kurume's loyalty to Captain Lido and planned to seek his promotion to Commander in about a year.
  • Xia Qiu swam deeper, passing up smaller fish and chasing a seven-meter fish as potential prey.
  • Xia Qiu sensed a group nearby, surfaced, and saw more than a dozen dolphins swimming near the island.

Ch. 29Dolphins

Xia Qiu hunted a pod of dolphins to obtain the sonar abilities he needed, defeating their coordinated attacks and eating several of them. An orange-haired girl watched him from the shore and wondered what kind of fish he was before heading home as rain approached.

  • Xia Qiu spotted a pod of large dolphins and pursued them, hoping to gain a Sonar System.
  • The dolphins surrounded Xia Qiu and rammed him, but he counterattacked with a Rotating Palm Strike and killed several of them.
  • Xia Qiu ate seven or eight dolphins, reached his maximum intake, and returned to his habitat to await evolution.
  • An orange-haired girl watched Xia Qiu hunt and disappear underwater, wondered what species he was, and left the shore before the rain.

Ch. 30Sea Spray

Nami practiced drawing nautical charts and told Nojiko that she planned to travel the world, while Xia Qiu hunted in the waters near the island and considered why his growth had slowed. The chapter left Xia Qiu closing in on a large marine creature detected by his evolving sonar.

  • Nami finished a nautical chart and explained to Nojiko the measurements needed to make accurate charts.
  • Nami told Nojiko that she dreamed of traveling the world to draw maps, then returned to studying.
  • Xia Qiu reflected that his growth had slowed, and suspected his increasingly powerful body was consuming more energy.
  • Xia Qiu used his evolved Sonar System to search for prey and detected a roughly seven-meter creature northwest of him.
  • Xia Qiu swam toward the detected creature.

Ch. 31Rainstorm

Nami tested her new wind meter on the coast and predicted a storm as the weather worsened. She also witnessed the enormous Black Fish kill a blue whale before rushing home to warn Cocoyasi Village.

  • Bellemere shared a meal with Nami and Nojiko after they picked and packed oranges, then let them rest.
  • Nami took her stolen wind meter and other equipment to the coast to measure the wind and observe two approaching ships.
  • Nami compared the wind meter’s readings with her flag method and recorded the results at several locations.
  • As the wind strengthened, Nami predicted heavy rain and saw the Black Fish kill a blue whale offshore.
  • Nami ran home warning villagers to bring in their laundry, and Cocoyasi Village acted on her weather prediction.

Ch. 32Doubt

Cocoyasi Village paid a pirate crew to leave, but their ship sank soon after as Xia Qiu attacked and devoured the pirates. Nami wondered whether the sea creature, which she had observed near the island for over a year, had begun hunting humans.

  • Genzo negotiated with the pirates, and the villagers paid them one million Belly along with food and water to leave.
  • Bellemere argued over her share of the payment, and Genzo offered to cover part of it for her.
  • After the pirates sailed away, their ship began sinking, and Xia Qiu ate the pirates who escaped into the sea.
  • Genzo warned the villagers to avoid going out to sea while they worried about the enormous fish.
  • Nami studied her notebook and questioned whether Xia Qiu had deliberately attacked the pirates and might now consider humans prey.

Ch. 33Arrival

Xia Qiu encountered a gigantic sea beast near his usual hunting grounds and decided to avoid provoking it. Meanwhile, Arlong arrived in the East China Sea and declared his intention to enslave humans and build a Fish-Man empire.

  • Xia Qiu hunted a twelve-meter whale shark but abandoned the chase after his sonar detected an enormous creature nearby.
  • Xia Qiu estimated the sea beast was at least sixty meters long and chose to observe it from a safe distance rather than fight it.
  • The sea beast swam away, and Xia Qiu decided to be more careful before resuming his hunt.
  • Arlong arrived in the East China Sea and announced that he would rule its waters and enslave humanity.
  • An octopus Fish-Man reminded Arlong of his promise to Jinbe not to harm humans, but Arlong rejected Jinbe's authority and justified his plans as revenge.

Ch. 34Arlong Pirates

Nami completed a detailed map of her island, then stole a navigation book and was chased by the bookstore owner and Genzo. Meanwhile, Xia Qiu encountered the approaching Arlong Pirates and fought their sea cow Moo underwater, leaving both creatures injured as Moo fled.

  • Nami finished her island map and went to the bookstore, where she took a navigation book she badly wanted.
  • The bookstore owner noticed the missing book and chased Nami, while Genzo joined in and caught her.
  • Xia Qiu spotted the Arlong Pirates' ship approaching the island and decided not to confront the crew directly.
  • A huge sea creature charged Xia Qiu, who recognized it as Moo and turned to fight rather than flee.
  • Xia Qiu dodged Moo's charge, bit off part of his pectoral fin, and struck his jaw, but Moo injured Xia Qiu's horn and escaped.

Ch. 35Fish-Man

After recovering from his fight with Sea Cow Moo Moo, Xia Qiu learned that the Arlong Pirates had made his home their base and devised a plan to grow stronger and turn the Marines against them. A month later, he attacked two Fish-Men left behind at Arlong Park and ate them.

  • Xia Qiu healed his injuries, returned to Cocoyasi Village, and discovered the Arlong Pirates were building their base at Southern Harbor.
  • Xia Qiu planned to hunt Fish-Men for strength, target them separately, and provoke the Marines into pursuing Arlong.
  • Arlong made Nami join his crew as navigator and promised to return her village if she paid him one hundred million Belly, while privately intending to keep her.
  • A month later, Xia Qiu watched the pirate ship leave Arlong Park and approached the two ordinary Fish-Men left guarding the pier.
  • Xia Qiu smashed the pier, ate the thin Fish-Man, then crushed the fat Fish-Man against the cliff and swallowed him.

Ch. 36Ambush

Xia Qiu waited underwater for a chance to ambush the Arlong Pirates while Nami helped Hachi investigate the damaged harbor walkway. After Lance and Eddie came to inspect it, Xia Qiu detected them above the water and prepared to attack.

  • Xia Qiu absorbed energy from two Fish-Men and continued hiding beneath the seabed, hoping to ambush more of Arlong's forces.
  • Hachi sent Lance and Eddie to find Ruijin and Peters, but the pair noticed that most of the harbor walkway had disappeared.
  • Nami persuaded Hachi that the villagers had little reason to damage the walkway and urged Lance and Eddie to inspect the fragments.
  • Nami returned to her room and watched the harbor through binoculars as Lance and Eddie went to investigate.
  • Xia Qiu waited underwater, detected two figures above him, and grinned as he prepared to ambush them.

Ch. 37Trap

Xia Qiu ambushed Fish-Men investigating the wreckage near Arlong Park, killing Lance and Eddie. Nami lured Hachi toward the harbor, where he jumped into the sea to investigate, and she prayed that Xia Qiu would kill him.

  • Lance and Eddie examined the floating debris, and Xia Qiu ambushed and swallowed Lance.
  • Eddie tried to escape Xia Qiu underwater, but Xia Qiu struck him with his tail and swallowed him.
  • Nami watched the attack from Arlong Park and realized Xia Qiu was hostile toward Fish-Men.
  • Nami told Hachi that a school of giant sharks had attacked Lance and Eddie, then hurried to the harbor to warn him not to dive in.
  • Hachi leaped into the sea despite Nami's warning, and Nami prayed that Xia Qiu would kill him.

Ch. 38Fight to the Death

Xia Qiu ambushed Hachi underwater, but their fight left both of them injured and neither defeated the other. Hachi abandoned the pursuit and swam back toward the surface as Xia Qiu escaped into the distance.

  • Hachi descended from the harbor and encountered Xia Qiu, who charged at him from behind a rock.
  • Hachi dodged Xia Qiu's bite and punched him, but Xia Qiu rammed Hachi and sent him flying.
  • Hachi clung to Xia Qiu's tail and climbed his body, then released him to avoid being crushed against a cliff.
  • Xia Qiu slammed into the cliff, and Hachi struck his back with a barrage of punches, injuring Xia Qiu and damaging two of Hachi's hands on Xia Qiu's spines.
  • Xia Qiu sank and swam away, while Hachi chose not to pursue and headed upward.

Ch. 39Injuries

Hachi fought a massive sea creature that Nami had mistaken for a shark and returned injured, while Xia Qiu escaped and healed by eating fish. After assessing Hachi’s strength, Xia Qiu resolved to evolve new combat abilities before returning to kill his enemies.

  • Nami watched as Hachi fought the sea creature underwater, then saw him emerge wounded.
  • Hachi explained that the attacker was a huge sea creature, and Nami apologized for misidentifying it as a shark.
  • Hachi reassured Nami that he would warn the other Fish-Men and wait for Boss Arlong and Kuroobi to help kill the creature.
  • Xia Qiu fled with a serious back wound, ate several fish, and healed as his body absorbed the resulting heat.
  • Xia Qiu considered Hachi’s speed and strength, recognized that he was outmatched, and decided to seek new abilities before returning to kill his enemies.

Ch. 40Requirements

At Arlong Park, Nami persuaded Arlong to let her take a ship out to measure currents, with Hachi assigned to protect her. Meanwhile, Xia Qiu searched the deep sea for large cephalopods and detected a huge tentacled creature as he left the story poised to attack it.

  • Arlong ordered Kuroobi and Chuu to hunt the sea fish that had injured Hachi, while Nami worried about its fate.
  • Nami explained that mapping the currents required trips to sea and persuaded Arlong to let her travel on merchant or cargo ships after finishing the local chart.
  • Arlong agreed to have Hachi protect Nami at sea, and Nami returned to her room to watch the harbor through her telescope.
  • Xia Qiu swam toward deeper waters, eating a Spiny Fish and searching for larger octopus, cuttlefish, or squid.
  • Xia Qiu detected a soft-bodied creature about twenty meters long with a huge head and many tentacles, then charged toward it.
