Missions were forever the main theme of a ninja's life. Whether in peacetime or war, there would always be a mountain of missions waiting to be completed.
That was why bases on the battlefield specifically established mission offices to issue assignments such as reconnaissance and patrols around the fringes of the battlefield or the base itself.
There was not much difference from how things worked in the village.
The only difference was that missions issued by the village paid out directly upon completion. On the battlefield, however, completing missions earned accumulated merit. Once enough merit had been amassed, one could be promoted to Chunin or even Jonin. Of course, it could also be exchanged for advanced Ninjutsu Scrolls and Ninjutsu.
If none of that was wanted, the merit could be converted into money after the war ended, enough to support one's family.
If someone was unfortunate enough to die in battle, Konoha would not only provide their family with compensation, but also convert their accumulated merit into money and other goods for them, allowing them to live better.
That was also why so many civilians wanted to become ninja. Simply put, the benefits were good. Most lower-ranking ninja did not become ninja for the Will of Fire. It was merely because this profession made money quickly and offered excellent benefits.
Uchiha Chen had heard all this from the Taki Tōru siblings. They were exactly that sort of lower-ranking ninja—born as civilians without much talent. They had become ninja to earn more money, then eventually open a shop in Konoha and live a good life.
So as soon as they reached the battlefield, the Taki Tōru siblings urged Uchiha Chen to head to the mission office and pick up an assignment.
"Not bad. I found a mission suitable for our squad."
