MuLan had left, and Shen Lang sat alone in the study, staring into space.
Being confined was no good. He had to find a way to help Father-in-Law regain his freedom.
Because in a few days, he still had something important to do.
But when dealing with Father-in-Law, he absolutely could not come at it head-on. He had to take a roundabout approach.
Just then, Xiao Bing rushed in and said, "Live-in Son-in-Law, this is bad! Hurry and hide! Young Lord has brought people to beat you up."
Shen Lang froze. Jin MuCong, that fat shut-in? He came to beat me up? Xiao Bing said, "Live-in Son-in-Law, hurry and hide. I'll report this to the Earl's Wife at once."
Shen Lang said, "No, don't tell Mother-in-Law."
Xiao Bing said, "Live-in Son-in-Law, our Young Lord is a muddlehead. He acts without regard for consequences. If he beats you, you'll be the one at a loss. Even if Earl punishes him afterward, it'll be too late."
Shen Lang said, "All right, I know what to do. Go out first."
"Live-in Son-in-Law, don't be foolish!"
When she heard Shen Lang would not go hide, Xiao Bing stamped her foot hard.
"Hmph, you don't appreciate good intentions. I'm not bothering with you anymore."
Xiao Bing glared at Shen Lang, then ran out at top speed. She had still decided to inform the Earl's Wife.
Young Lord was simple-minded and had no sense of restraint. If he damaged the Live-in Son-in-Law, that would be trouble.
Only after Xiao Bing left did Shen Lang smile faintly.
If he could not even handle a fat shut-in and had to hide, then what the hell was he doing at Earl's Manor?
Though he had never dealt with Jin MuCong before, he knew enough about him.
His limbs were useless, his mind was simple, and he loved putting on a show.
Dealing with someone like that could not have been easier.
Shen Lang picked up a writing brush and began writing name after name on the blank wall.
He wrote those names with dragons soaring and phoenixes dancing, brimming with murderous intent.
A moment later, clamorous voices rose outside.
Before the man appeared, his voice arrived first.
"Shen Lang, get your ass out here! If I don't beat you until you're crawling around looking for your teeth today, I won't be surnamed Jin!"
"You're merely a Live-in Son-in-Law, yet you've got some nerve! You actually dared bully a maid of Earl's Manor? I treat Xiao Bing like a little sister, and you dared bully her? You're courting death!"
Young Lord Jin MuCong roared, intending to pour all the rage from today's beating onto Shen Lang.
It was all because of you, the chief culprit.
Very soon, Shen Lang saw a fat man charge in, burning with rage and clutching an iron rod.
More than a dozen of his attendants stood guard outside the door.
Young Lord dared lay hands on the Live-in Son-in-Law; they did not. But they could help Young Lord guard every exit.
After entering, Jin MuCong discovered Shen Lang standing on a stool and writing on the wall, filling it with names.
"Shen Lang, what are you doing? Get down here!"
Shen Lang remained atop the tall stool. Of course he would not get down. If he did and really let Jin MuCong, that fat shut-in, hit him with a rod, he would suffer a huge loss.
Shen Lang said, "Young Lord, I'm writing names."
Sure enough, the wall bore a great many names.
Tian Shisan, Tian Shisi, Tian Heng, Lin Mo, Xu Qianqian, Zhang Jin, Xu Guangyun...
Jin MuCong's curiosity flared. "Why are you writing these names?"
Shen Lang said, "They are all my enemies. I'm afraid I'll forget them, so I wrote their names on the wall to spur myself to remember these enemies at all times. I must take revenge."
Then Shen Lang took out a brush dipped in red ink and drew huge crosses over the names Tian Shisan and Tian Shisi, glaring as vividly as blood.
"What does it mean that you crossed out these two names?" Young Lord asked.
Shen Lang said, "I've already dealt with these two. My great vengeance has been avenged."
Young Lord was puzzled. What kind of hatred could make Shen Lang write these names on the wall?
Shen Lang said, "Every moment, I remind myself: revenge, revenge. Every morning when I get up, I recite these enemies' names three times. Before going to sleep, I recite them three times as well."
Young Lord could not help shuddering.
This hatred had to be carved into his bones, a towering blood feud as deep as the sea.
"What grudge did this Tian Shisan have with you?" Young Lord asked. "Was it the hatred of murdering your father, or the resentment of stealing your wife?"
Only hatred that immense could make Shen Lang remember it so deeply.
Jin MuCong had heard of Tian Shisan and Tian Shisi. They were formidable men with high Martial Arts.
Shen Lang said coldly, "Tian Shisan once threatened me. I had Tian Heng break both his legs. Those two legs of his were smashed into five or six pieces."
Ah?!
Young Lord twitched. "Then... then what about Tian Shisi?"
Shen Lang said angrily, "He was even more detestable. The hatred between us ran as deep as the sea. Not only did he threaten me, he pointed a finger at my head. What I hate most in this life is people pointing at my head. So both his legs and arms were broken, smashed to pieces."
"Ah..." Seeing that his own iron rod was still pointed at Shen Lang, Jin MuCong hurriedly lowered it.
He was completely dumbfounded.
That... that little of a grudge?
Shen Lang had actually written their names on the wall, and even recited them three times every morning and evening.
Just how petty and vengeful was Shen Lang? How narrow-minded was he?
Were you... were you a demon? In all my life, I've never seen anyone hold a grudge like you!
Seeing Shen Lang's chilly gaze slowly sweep up and down his body, while the hand holding the brush seemed eager to move, Jin MuCong could not help asking, "Y-you... why have you left such a large blank space on this wall? Why not fill the entire wall with their names?"
Shen Lang sneered. "A person's life is long. Who knows how many new enemies will appear? I'm saving this blank space so I can add the names of new enemies."
Young Lord's scalp went numb.
Tian Shisan and Tian Shisi had merely threatened him and pointed at him, yet their limbs had been broken and they had been thrown home to await death.
If I beat Shen Lang, wouldn't he chop me into ten thousand pieces? And judging by Shen Lang's posture, it seemed as though he was ready to write Jin MuCong's name up there at any moment.
Shen Lang asked, "Young Lord, did you need something from me?"
"Oh, nothing, nothing..." Young Lord hurriedly threw away the iron rod in his hand and smiled. "I ate too much, so I came out for a stroll."
Shen Lang said, "I think I just heard someone shouting that they were going to beat me up?"
"No! Who shouted that? Daring to beat Earl's Manor's Live-in Son-in-Law—are they tired of living?" Young Lord said. "Well then, Shen Lang, keep writing. I... I'll head back now."
Then Young Lord Jin MuCong ran off at lightning speed, far more nimble than his body suggested.
Shen Lang could not help laughing. What a coward.
Young Lord Jin MuCong had just run out when he slammed straight into the great demon king he feared most.
His mother, the Earl's Wife.
"Well, well, you unfilial wretch actually came to beat Shen Lang?" the Earl's Wife said furiously. She strode forward, grabbed Young Lord by the ear, and dragged him away. "If I don't beat you to death today, then you're not my son!"
Young Lord cried out in pain, "Mother, Mother, I didn't hit him! I hadn't even hit him yet!"
"You hadn't hit him yet? So you did have that thought?" the Earl's Wife said. "It seems I didn't beat you hard enough today. Don't worry, Jin MuCong, I'll definitely satisfy you. Your brother-in-law just won honor for Earl's Manor today, yet you wanted to beat him? I have no son like you."
Young Lord said, "Mother, how did you get here so fast? How did you know?"
The Earl's Wife said, "Xiao Bing ran over to tell me. I didn't believe it at first. Turns out you're truly so brazenly audacious."
Young Lord genuinely started crying, his eyes brimming with tears.
Xiao Bing, I came to beat Shen Lang to vent your anger for you.
And this is what I get—you sold me out immediately.
I treat you as my little sister, but you treat me as an enemy.
Young Lord Jin MuCong was overcome with grief, tears streaming down his face.
Heavens, what sin did I commit in my past life that you had to punish me like this? He knew he would definitely be beaten badly enough to lie in bed for half a month.
No one knew a mother like her son. His mother looked beautiful and elegant, noble and gentle, but only Jin MuCong knew that a Tigress lived in her heart—and her Martial Arts were formidable to boot.
If she said she would beat him half to death, then she would definitely beat him half to death.
Just then, Shen Lang emerged.
"Mother-in-Law."
The Earl's Wife changed faces as if turning a page. She had been winter-cold toward Young Lord just moments ago, yet she was spring-warm toward Shen Lang.
"Lang'er, don't worry. Your mother will definitely vent this anger for you."
Shen Lang said, "Young Lord only came to chat with me just now. We didn't argue, much less fight. Please spare him this time."
"Really?" the Earl's Wife asked softly.
"Really," Shen Lang said.
Smack!
The Earl's Wife suddenly slapped the back of Young Lord Jin MuCong's head, nearly knocking him unconscious.
Shen Lang rather suspected that this unlucky child had perhaps been slapped stupid by his Mother-in-Law since childhood.
"Look at how good your brother-in-law is to you. He's even pleading for you, you bastard," the Earl's Wife said. "But Lang'er, you needn't plead for this fool. Today, I must beat him into obedience once and for all, so he'll know to respect you in the future."
With that, the Earl's Wife began beating him.
Those jade-like palms came down blow after blow, though they struck the thickest part of Jin MuCong's back.
Young Lord Jin MuCong trembled all over, as though he were about to be flattened into a pancake.
Even Shen Lang thought it looked painful.
"Mother, spare me! Spare me!"
Shen Lang hurriedly stepped forward to stop her. "Mother-in-Law, please stop. Don't let your anger harm your health. Young Lord is honest and straightforward. Why don't I talk with him?"
The Earl's Wife's gaze toward Shen Lang instantly became kind and gentle again.
"Lang'er is still the most sensible and filial, tolerant and magnanimous."
Then she said to Shen Lang, "Lang'er, you're his brother-in-law, so discipline him properly for me. If he refuses to listen, just hit him directly. Your mother is going to sleep."
The Earl's Wife turned and left.
Young Lord Jin MuCong let out a long breath.
I survived again. It really wasn't easy! Who would have thought...
The Earl's Wife suddenly turned back, twisted Jin MuCong's ear, and said, "You still dare sigh? What do you mean by that? You're not convinced? You're criticizing me in your heart?"
Even Shen Lang was almost moved to tears. For this brother-in-law to survive until today truly had not been easy.
