After Grandma Chiyo bathed and fed Zhang Miao, he secured a daily source of Shukaku fragments through Gaara’s woodcarvings and used lotteries to collect Karura fragments. He finished with enough fragments to recruit Karura and Yashamaru, and resolved to confront the traitorous Yashamaru.

Zhang Miao impersonated Ōnoki and spent the night in Kurotsuchi's room, fooling Kitsuchi. When the real Ōnoki discovered the deception, Zhang Miao convinced Kitsuchi that Ōnoki was the impostor, and the two men prepared to settle the matter outside.
