Rogers charged into the heavily damaged street with his round shield in hand.
Chitauri Soldiers still flew overhead from time to time. The panicked crowds in the streets had yet to be fully evacuated, running about in confusion or hiding beneath overturned cars.
More than a dozen police cars were parked there, while dozens of police officers fired wildly at the soldiers in the sky and on the ground.
One of the officers was reporting the situation to his superior.
Rogers leaped from a vehicle that had been blasted into the air onto a police car.
Looking at the police commander, he ordered without hesitation,
"Quickly, send people into that building. There are still many people inside, and they're in grave danger."
"Take them out through the basement or the subway."
"I need to get from here to Thirty-Ninth Street and establish a defensive position."
A nearby police officer looked at Rogers, dressed in an old-fashioned blue uniform, and said, "Why should I follow your orders?"
At the same time, two or three Chitauri flying soldiers dropped down beside Rogers and raised their guns.
Rogers raised his shield to block the gunfire, knocked one soldier away with a punch, then swung his shield and sent another flying.
The third soldier raised his gun at Rogers.
Rogers grabbed the weapon. The sharp edge of his round shield sliced off the soldier's arm, and he swung that arm, smashing the soldier away.
When he looked back at the police,
the commander immediately turned and began directing his subordinates. "Pick a few people to go into the building and bring everyone inside down to the basement."
At the same time, he reported over the radio, "Establish a defensive position from here to Thirty-Ninth Street immediately."
Rogers charged out as well and continued battling
