R'lyeh would rise from the bottom of the Chaos Sea, and the great Cthulhu would awaken! The universe would be destroyed! They could ignore the earlier talk of the Myriad Realms and epochs! But R'lyeh rising from the deep sea, Cthulhu awakening, and the universe being destroyed—wasn't that clearly referring to them?
They were the oldest and most mysterious.
At this moment, the Cosmic Great Dao was sealed and the rules were incomplete. Even the most heaven-defying Ancient Taboo could not pry apart the rules and see that final Gate of the Great Dao.
Thus, they chose to lie dormant, crossing one universe epoch after another. After billions of years, they had smuggled themselves into the distant future and arrived at the final Era of Dharma Decline Dao Proving.
That era was the Era of Dharma Decline, and indeed the end when the universe was about to be destroyed.
