Insects, or arthropods, were the most successful species on the planet, comprising eighty percent of all life forms. There were many reasons for the success of their evolution, but their huge numbers and easily diversified limbs were certainly among the most important, helping them adapt to every ecosystem on the planet.

The most common arthropod limbs were walking legs and swimming legs.

On that foundation, countless specializations arose to fulfill more specific tasks. The basic form was the pincer, or rather, the claw.

They were initially used to feed in benthic environments, but soon developed into powerful weapons for hunting.

In terrestrial arachnids, however, this pair of chelicerae underwent even more drastic specialization, becoming a pair of sharp, hooked needles—in other words, fangs.
