Bacteriophages were a type of organism found in nature. Though they were lifeforms that devoured bacteria, they were also a type of virus: genetic material wrapped in a protein shell, complete with a tail.
What made bacteriophages special was that they used bacteria as hosts. They could automatically seek out and identify target bacteria, then use their tails to attach themselves to the bacteria's cell walls and invade. Lysozyme opened a gap in the bacterial cell wall, and the tail sheath contracted like actomyosin, exposing the tail tube. It then stabbed fiercely into the cell wall and, like a syringe, injected the genetic material in its head—DNA—into the bacterial cell.
Finally, the DNA hijacked and transformed the bacterium's own materials, changing everything within it into bacteriophage DNA. New bacteriophages grew one after another, then burst free from their shells.
This entire process was extraordinarily complex, involving recognition, movement, inheritance, hijacking, and more. Its structure and appearance also resembled that of a robot, yet bacteriophages themselves were minuscule, only 0.01 to 0.1 micrometers in size—ten to one hundred nanometers.
A robot with such powerful functions at that scale was indeed an excellent template for nanorobots.
However, creating robots of this caliber from Metallic Material or composite materials was absolutely impossible at the current stage. They could only possibly be cultivated through biotechnology, using specific methods and materials.
