Background / History
Chen Shan Ming commands a special-operations team during the Blue Army exercise. When recruit Jiang Yan Hai repeatedly evades Wolf Fang’s pursuit, Chen orders his unit to capture him at all costs to protect the brigade’s reputation. 36 37
After Jiang Yan Hai exposes his “Jiang Ling” disguise, Chen—who had been fooled by the identity and had attempted to court her—reacts with furious embarrassment and immediately fights him. The exchange establishes Jiang as a combatant strong enough to pressure Chen in direct hand-to-hand combat. 71 75
Chen becomes one of the principal instructors responsible for Jiang Yan Hai and the new special-forces recruits. His attempts to push Jiang beyond his limits repeatedly backfire: Jiang completes punitive drills, grenade-identification tests, obstacle courses, and a driving course at levels Chen did not believe possible. 78 87 99
Although Chen asks Fan Tian Lei to replace him as Jiang’s trainer, he accepts the assignment after being reminded that Jiang’s improvement will make future teammates safer. He continues training Jiang despite the blow to his own confidence. 89 99
He later leads recruits in high-pressure simulated combat and mine scenarios, using realistic deception—including a staged “injury” and explosion—to teach the cost of battlefield mistakes. 158 161 163 169
Personality
Chen Shan Ming is strict, blunt, and intensely competitive. He readily punishes violations and designs punishing training meant to force recruits past their assumed limits. 78 84 90
His pride is easily provoked by Jiang Yan Hai’s repeated displays of impossible competence, yet Chen does not deny ability when he sees it. He openly concedes that Jiang is exceptional and remains committed to developing him as a soldier. 89 98 99
Beneath his harsh manner, Chen is responsible and protective. During the live-grenade test, he remains close enough to shield Jiang if a judgment goes wrong; when He Chen Guang steps on a mine, Chen personally handles the danger. 87 162 163

- Uses exhaustion drills, gunfire, forced movement, and extended static holds to keep trainees functioning under pressure. 84
- Tested Jiang Yan Hai’s ability to distinguish live grenades from training grenades under extreme time pressure. 87 88
- Staged a convincing mine explosion and leg injury to test his team’s resolve and cohesion. 163 169

Combat and Fieldcraft
Chen is an experienced close-quarters fighter and field operator.

- His height, muscular build, rough hands, body hair, and facial features are used to demonstrate the practical problems of disguising a man as a woman. 127 128
- Jiang successfully transforms him with prosthetics, makeup, a wig, and a tailored cover identity; the lesson is recorded as future teaching material. 129 130
