Background

During an expedition through Black Dragon Marsh, Ding traveled alongside Wang Hong, Old Man Ge, the Lei cultivator, and Cultivator Shi. Though usually quiet, he proposed the party’s method for harvesting Green-tailed Spirit Bee honey: lure the swarm away in batches, kill the bees, then collect the hive’s contents. 43

The group later found a grove of Crimson Silk Fruits guarded by Green Wind Monkeys. Ding forcefully urged the others to attack, arguing that cultivators must accept risk to pursue the Great Dao. At the time, he appeared to be a Qi Refining Layer Four cultivator and struggled while facing two monkeys. 45

Ding had in fact engineered the entire encounter. He told the Lei cultivator about a spirit-fruit orchard, intending for the party to draw away the monkey pack while he secretly entered a hidden Foundation Establishment cultivator’s cave dwelling. A formation inside the dwelling injured him, but he escaped with its wealth. 46 47

After abandoning the group with an Earth Escape Talisman, Ding pursued Wang Hong through the stone forest. He admitted that he had long coveted Wang Hong’s possessions and intended to kill him for treasure. During the confrontation, he revealed his true Qi Refining Layer Eight cultivation. 45 46

Personality

Ding presents himself as decisive and willing to take risks, using rhetoric about the Great Dao to push others into dangerous fights. 45 His actions reveal him to be calculating, greedy, and ruthless: he manipulated his companions into serving as bait, then tried to murder Wang Hong after securing the cave dwelling’s treasure. 46 47

He is also highly self-preserving. He escaped the Green Wind Monkey horde rather than remain with the party, and repeatedly relied on mobility techniques to avoid Wang Hong’s attacks. 45 46

Ding’s escape is revealed to have been part of a plot to use the others as a diversion while he looted a hidden cave dwelling. He then attempts to kill Wang Hong for additional treasure, but Wang Hong confines him with Iron Thorns and finishes him with talismans. 46
