Carter stared at the coordinates on the radar, his brow tightly furrowed. The time announced by Army Ant was drawing closer and closer, yet he still sensed nothing unusual.
Could the seismometer be fake? Carter could not help entertaining the thought.
Being able to warn of an earthquake two hours in advance sounded almost unbelievable. If it was truly that terrifying, then Army Ant was something else.
Just as Carter was lost in thought, the warship suddenly jolted. He lost his balance and slammed headfirst into the wall beside him.
"What's going on?" Carter braced himself against the bulkhead. The violent shaking made it impossible for him to stand steadily.
"We don't know."
The others were just as flustered as Carter. The sudden shaking had caught them completely off guard.
Before long, the warship steadied again. Once Carter had regained his footing, he rubbed the swelling on his head and glared unhappily at the helmsman.
"What was that?"
"We don't know either. There are no winds or waves on the surface, but the ship suddenly shook. It felt as if some enormous creature were swimming underwater." The other crew members looked around with lingering fear.
The sailors on deck were equally terrified. Fortunately, they had reacted quickly, or they might have fallen into the sea.
Falling into the water here would not be a good thing.
Thinking of one possibility, Carter's expression shifted. "Continue sailing. Head for the target waters."
His mission was to retrieve the device at the source of the signal and bring it back for scientists to study. Everything else was none of his concern.
The sea remained calm, with no visible abnormalities, but things outside were far from calm.
Not long after the earthquake struck, the United States Geological Survey released a report: a magnitude 7.9
