Background / History

Danzō was a disciple of Tobirama Senju and a longtime associate of Hiruzen Sarutobi. During an ambush by the Gold and Silver Brothers Squad, he hesitated when Tobirama sought someone to cover the group’s retreat; Hiruzen volunteered first and was chosen as the next Hokage. Danzō regarded that moment as the loss of the position he believed should have been his. 166 243

He subsequently cast himself as the “root” beneath Hiruzen’s sunlit “leaf”: the operative who would protect Konoha through methods the Hokage could not openly use. His resentment toward Hiruzen hardened into a belief that Hiruzen’s administration had squandered Konoha’s strength through failures including the deaths or departures of major shinobi and the Uchiha clan’s destruction. 166 198

After discovering Sakura’s graduation essay, Haruno Sakura’s Will of Fire, Danzō recognized its strategic value and stole it from the Hokage’s office. He attempted to bring Sakura into Root, first through a covert nighttime “invitation” and later through direct recruitment; both efforts failed. 26 28 166

During the war in the Land of Rivers, Danzō’s formations initially contained Sunagakure effectively. However, the death of Aburame Torune and the resulting loss of control over nanoscale poison insects caused catastrophic friendly casualties. Hiruzen removed Danzō from command and had him escorted back to Konoha. 116 141 144 145

Unable to remove Sakura through Konoha’s legal system, Danzō used Kotoamatsukami to influence the Land of Fire’s Daimyo. He secured an edict declaring himself the Fifth Hokage, forced Hiruzen into retirement, and began purging rivals and detaining Sakura’s associates. 185 203 204 205

Sakura returned with a competing Daimyo edict naming her Hokage and publicly accused Danzō of controlling the former Daimyo. Cornered, Danzō exposed his implanted Sharingan and used Kotoamatsukami in an attempt to seize control of Sakura; the technique struck a Yang Release-enhanced Shadow Clone instead. He was captured after his crimes were revealed. 206 207 208

Following Hiruzen’s death, Sakura visited Danzō in prison and informed him of it. He drank poisoned sake, asked to be buried near Hiruzen, and died after warning Sakura to beware Orochimaru. He was buried in Konoha Cemetery beneath a blank tombstone. 243

His fixation on becoming Hokage was rooted in his failure to volunteer before Hiruzen during Tobirama’s retreat. This grievance endured into old age, driving his recruitment attempts, wartime pursuit of military merit, manipulation of the Daimyo, and eventual coup. 99 166 203 243

He was also a capable but manipulative recruiter. Danzō tried to exploit Sakura’s ambitions and Sasuke’s grief over the Uchiha massacre, tailoring his arguments to portray Hiruzen as corrupt and himself as Konoha’s necessary savior. 166 198

In his final moments, Danzō acknowledged—at least internally—that Hiruzen had not been the naive one between them. His last request to rest near Hiruzen and his warning about Orochimaru suggest a measure of regret and reconciliation. 243
