Please Don't Disturb My Creative Process (Fourth Update, 11,000 Words! Please Vote with Monthly Tickets!)
Suzhou gardens, on location. Day. Inner courtyard of Zhao Residence.
On a May afternoon in Jiangnan, moisture and the faint scent of flowers drifted through the air.
Meticulously arranged pavilions and towers, artificial hills and winding streams outlined the extravagant life of a great southern clan—dreamlike and illusory, even more lavish than an imperial palace.
Nothing was not exquisite; nothing was not luxurious.
Zhang Zhijian, playing Suzhou Prefect Zhao Wenhua, worked up an expression of obsession and unease as the camera pushed in from behind and to one side.
Two maidservants with lowered heads silently pulled open the carved wooden doors.
Su Xiaoxiao, played by Chen Hao, made her entrance.
The first thing to enter view was not a person, but a flowing wash of color and light.
She wore a long robe of soft gauze in sky-blue jade, draped with a half-transparent, moon-white gauze jacket. Under the specially designed lighting, the fabric rippled with a watery sheen, so light it seemed as though she might dissolve into the night at any moment.
Sparse scrolling-lotus patterns were embroidered into the hem in incredibly fine silver thread, glimmering in and out of sight as she walked—restrained, yet luxurious.
Her black hair was like a bank of clouds, arranged in an exquisite fallen-horse bun. She wore only a kingfisher-feather-and-pearl hair ornament and a simple jade hairpin, with no unnecessary adornments.
Shen Shanden knew Chen Hao's best state well, and he also understood the beauty of "leaving space."
Pictures with nothing left on were not as soul-stirring as ones that still retained a few scraps of cloth.
Too many pearls and jade ornaments would instead steal away Chen Hao's own natural, fiercely aggressive allure.
Her makeup was equally light, emphasizing only her signature almond eyes—tender yet timid, and unfathomably deep—and her full, lustrous cherry lips.
Within those eyes lingered a few traces of an otherworldly, mysterious charm.
There was dynamic beauty within the shot.
She did not immediately look at Zhao Wenhua. Instead, she lowered her eyelids slightly and took light, lotus-like steps.
The camera slowly tilted up from her trailing skirt, lingering in close-up on the embroidered tip of her shoe appearing and disappearing beneath the hem.
At precisely the right moment, a fan sent over a wisp of breeze. It stirred the plain-colored silk scarf looped over her arm, lifted several strands of hair by her temples, and brushed across her creamy cheeks.
The angle and strength of that wind had been precisely calculated and rehearsed, all to create that ethereal aura of "graceful as a startled swan, supple as a swimming dragon," while retaining the soft seductiveness of the mortal world.
There was also a still, spiritual beauty within the shot.
When she reached a point roughly three steps before Zhao Wenhua, she finally raised her eyes.
The camera steadily pushed into a close shot, precisely framing the perfect composition above her shoulders.
The lighting technician placed the key light at a forty-five-degree angle in front of and to one side of her, casting a faint shadow along one side of her high, elegant nose and further accentuating the contours of her face.
Her gaze first touched his and immediately withdrew, carrying just the right degree of shyness. In close-up, her long lashes trembled once like butterfly wings.
Then, bravely, with boundless attachment and admiration, she met Zhao Wenhua's eyes.
A medium shot displayed the graceful line of her neck and her posture of submission.
In the camera, those eyes brimmed with Jiangnan spring water, shimmering and rippling, seeming to speak yet holding back, as though they could draw a person's very soul away.
Shen Shanden deliberately blurred the background into a soft field of light, making Chen Hao's carefully sculpted face the picture's one and only, absolute focal point.
"Director Shen, this shot is way too beautiful! That's incredible."
After watching the footage, Chen Hao could not suppress her delighted astonishment as she looked toward Shen Shanden.
"You made me look..."
For a moment, she could not find the right words. Her eyes were full of joy and gratitude.
She truly felt that she had come to the right production.
Shen Shanden not only understood drama; he understood even better how to find the most dazzling balance between commercial appeal and artistry in an actor's charm, allowing her to present an onscreen image beyond even her own expectations.
Shen Shanden smiled and nodded, his gaze still fixed on the stunning frozen image on the monitor.
"It's because your foundation is good, Chen Hao. Su Xiaoxiao should look like this—unforgettable at first sight, making people willingly fall into her 'land of tenderness.' This is only the beginning. The real show is still to come."
His tone was certain. This perfect entrance had already laid an unquestionable visual foundation for the lethality of Su Xiaoxiao, this "beautiful weapon."
It was as though he could already see the amazement this character would stir up on future screens.
The camera assistant reported that the brightness distribution on the waveform monitor and the skin-tone line were all fine. The exposure level, contrast, skin tones, and color balance met the requirements.
"One more take."
Shen Shanden felt good about it.
With the crew's behind-the-scenes standards holding firm and the actors in front of the camera capable as well, working was simply comfortable.
Zhang Zhijian was a first-class actor with the Nanjing Repertory Theatre. Chen Hao had received formal film school training at the Central Academy of Drama and had also worked at the Beijing People's Art Theatre. They were both truly formidable.
This shot looked simple, but it was actually very complicated. Still, it had been rehearsed many times and could be completed in one take.
Not only had they delivered the effect he wanted, but during the official shoot, they had gone a step further and given him a pleasant surprise.
But on the second take, Chen Hao ran into a problem.
Shen Shanden did not call cut. Instead, he let them continue. The shooting schedule had allotted plenty of time for the first scene, so there was no need to rush.
There was plenty of film. China Film Group's full support was no joke—the cameras and equipment were all among the best in the country, and the prices were affordable.
"Cut."
The moment Shen Shanden called cut, Chen Hao apologized to Zhang Zhijian. "I'm sorry, Teacher Zhang. I didn't get it right."
"It's fine. These things happen all the time when filming," Zhang Zhijian comforted her.
Chen Hao then apologized to Shen Shanden as well, lowering her head. "Director, I had a bit of an emotional problem."
In the end, it was still Shen Shanden's fault. On camera, she had been so beautiful she barely seemed like herself, and it had made her overly emotional.
The sculpting of light and shadow brought out the texture and color of her costume to the fullest. Beneath the fluorescent lights, her skin looked whiter than snow, her eyes like stars.
That instant when she lifted her gaze had been captured with such precision, perfectly blending Su Xiaoxiao's seductive outward charm with the complexity of her inner feelings—and yet it was beautiful enough to shake the soul.
The effect on camera surpassed even her own expectations, especially the way the layers in her gaze came through.
There was also that close-up. Even she was astonished that the camera could render the layers in her eyes with such clarity and feeling.
That sense of vulnerability intertwined with resilience was exactly what she had been trying to portray.
"Take a moment and adjust."
Shen Shanden did not put any pressure on her. "The heart of your entrance is her positioning as a 'famous courtesan and queen of flowers,' a 'Yangzhou Thin Horse,' an 'exquisite gift.'"
"Through the changing layers in your eyes—shyness, attachment, admiration—you need to suggest the tamed bearing of someone used as a 'tool.'"
"What I want from this shot is for it to be beautiful while also leaving room for the character's development later on."
Shen Shanden's professionalism calmed Chen Hao down.
"Good."
Shen Shanden kept one take, signaling that the scene had passed.
The first day of filming went exceptionally smoothly. They had chosen indoor dialogue scenes, which they had rehearsed many times before. Not only did they finish the day's shooting schedule, they even filmed two extra scenes.
"Keep the film reels secure."
After wrap, Shen Shanden brought Zhou Qifeng and the editing assistant together to confirm the procedures for storing the film footage.
They checked the script supervisor logs for the imported footage, as well as whether the key descriptions and notes were accurate.
The process was tedious, but indispensable.
No matter how tight the budget was, they had to make at least two complete backups of the original footage and store them in separate physical locations.
The original footage was their lifeblood!
"You were amazing today."
During the crew's late-night snack, Da Mimi sidled up to him.
Shen Shanden knew what she wanted—his lifeblood—and lectured her, "Put your mind into acting."
"Oh."
Da Mimi started getting handsy.
Fan Bingbing also texted him, saying there was a problem with the shower in her room and asking if he could help.
Shen Shanden saw through the scheme at a glance.
"I need to focus on creating."
Shen Shanden replied with just that.
Great fortune and a chicken dinner—she still wanted to eat chicken tonight? Bingbing was dreaming too beautifully.
"Hm?"
Shen Shanden glanced at his messages. Chen Hao also wanted to discuss the script with him.
After chatting for a couple of lines, he found that it was actually a genuine creative exchange.
Today's scene had been filmed in a way that made Chen Hao feel good.
Chen Hao did not interfere with his creative work, but that somehow left Shen Shanden feeling a little disappointed again.
The disappointment did not last long. Sun Li sent him a congratulatory text, saying she had watched the website's illustrated live coverage today.
"I'm in seclusion. Don't disturb my creative work!"
Shen Shanden instinctively gave Sun Li a telling-off.
Thinking back on it, she had merely been concerned about him. He should not have spoken to her like that.
It was just a habit.
The filming of The Grand Director proceeded smoothly, while the Start of filming ceremony was like a massive boulder, sending wave after wave through the entertainment industry.
"Don't mention Shen Shanden again. The Grand Director is doomed to fail!"
Huang Li said angrily, unable to control his emotions any longer.
After the rewrite, this book has been getting better and better. There are some people stirring things up, so don't pay them any attention. I'll handle it. The more anxious they are, the more it proves we did the right thing. Just enjoy reading.
