Gotham's entire underworld was shaken by the news. No one liked a meddlesome bringer of justice. The underworld disliked him, and the authorities disliked him too.
But no one knew much more about Batman. They had no way to find the Knight of Justice hiding in the darkness, much less eliminate him.
He was powerful enough, and his equipment was sophisticated enough. Ever since he had appeared in Gotham, the city's underworld had needed to pray before doing anything, praying they would not be unlucky enough to encounter that unrestrained black shadow in the night.
There was not a single gang member who had not tasted Batman's Iron Fist. From gang bosses to lowly grunts, Batman treated them all equally.
And judging by his Style of Action, Batman generally preferred dealing with the leaders.
Quite a few bosses, after finding themselves unable to resist, had been tied up and dumped outside police stations by Batman.
In truth, those leaders did not care much about going to prison. They had plenty of money, plenty of connections and interests. Even if they really went in, they could easily be acquitted. They could even turn around and bite Batman back.
But being tied up and thrown at the entrance of a police station was humiliating enough to make them social dead in their circles.
The only consolation was that Batman had made quite a few underworld bosses suffer that same social death.
When it was not just one person being humiliated, the so-called social death naturally became much less severe. At the same time, they united against Batman with a shared hatred. As long as you fought Batman, we might not be friends, but I would definitely offer you some help.
