Inside the Medical Hall
The door to the ward was pushed open from outside. The moment Jiang Nannan walked in, she could not help but frown slightly.
"Mom, didn't I tell you to rest properly? You got out of bed again without permission."
Mother Jiang smiled gently and obediently sat back down on the bed.
"You silly girl, don't I know my own body? I'm really all better."
"That won't do. We have to wait until he examines you and confirms there's no problem."
Jiang Nannan showed her mother no leniency at all.
Back then, her mother had kept saying she was fine, right up until she collapsed at home. Only then had Jiang Nannan learned just how serious her illness was.
"I just finished eating. I need to walk around a little. Don't worry, I'm fine—"
Before Mother Jiang could finish, there was a knock at the door. Delight immediately appeared on Jiang Nannan's face.
"Come in."
As the words fell, a remarkably young-looking boy pushed the door open and entered, making Mother Jiang's jaw nearly drop.
This is the one who treated me!?
He's so young!?
He doesn't even look older than Nannan, does he!?
The thought that such a young boy had treated her illness inexplicably filled Mother Jiang with a deep sense of embarrassment.
But immediately afterward came a feeling of immense relief.
The reason for that relief was simple: there was hope for her aftereffects.
So many days had passed since her treatment, yet those two little buds had never gone down. The electric-shock-like sensation whenever they brushed against her clothes caused tremendous inconvenience in her daily life.
After enduring it for so many days, she had tried every method she could think of. Though none had worked, she had vaguely guessed at the cause.
Her heart had been troubled before, leaving her body in a state akin to long-term anemia. Now that the issue had been resolved, her body could not adapt all at once, so naturally—
But even if she knew the cause, she had no idea how to solve it!
Who knew how long this state would last? If it went on for half a year or a year, she would rather be anemic and bedridden!
Besides, it was too embarrassing to ask anyone else about something like this...
But if the person she asked was a child, it should not be such a big deal, right?
"Good afternoon, both of you. Auntie, have you experienced anything unusual these past few days?"
Though he had mentally prepared himself before coming, Huo Yuhao's smile was still somewhat stiff as he faced the now-awake Mother Jiang.
The latter half of his question was naturally directed at Jiang Nannan. But for some reason, he noticed that Mother Jiang's face seemed to flush a little after hearing him.
Could there really be something unusual?
"Nothing unusual has happened. Sorry to trouble you by making you come all this way. Please examine my mother again."
Jiang Nannan hurriedly stood and moved her seat aside, then turned to Mother Jiang.
"Mom, this is the one who treated you before, Huo Yuhao."
After forcing those damned thoughts from her mind, Mother Jiang offered Huo Yuhao a gentle smile.
"Yuhao, Nannan has already told me roughly what happened. Thank you so much this time."
"Mostly because Auntie's condition was not too serious, so the treatment process was not too troublesome."
Huo Yuhao sat on a stool. After carefully examining Mother Jiang's condition, a smile also appeared on his face.
"Judging by Auntie's complexion, you should have recovered almost completely. Please give me your hand so I can perform a more thorough examination. If there is no problem, you should not need to remain at the Medical Hall."
Mother Jiang's face lit up with delight. She promptly placed her hand in Huo Yuhao's palm and let him examine her. During the process, she shot Jiang Nannan a smug glance.
"See? I told you I was already fine."
Though Jiang Nannan was equally happy, she could not help rolling her eyes at her mother's unreliable behavior.
The results came quickly. Huo Yuhao opened his eyes and smiled as he nodded to Jiang Nannan.
"Auntie's illness can be considered cured. Just buy some medicine and slowly recuperate at home. Also, do not engage in overly strenuous exercise for the next two months."
"Okay." Jiang Nannan thanked him earnestly. "Thank you so much this time. Oh, right..."
Her tone suddenly paused, and she asked tentatively, "Yuhao, do you have an older sister attending Shrek Academy?"
After his treatment that day, she had carefully considered where she had heard the name Huo Yuhao before. Then she remembered the "Little Yuhao" her good roommate Tang Ya often mentioned.
"You mean Little Ya-jie?"
Huo Yuhao had considered the possibility that Tang Ya and Jiang Nannan might still be roommates in this life, but he had not expected Jiang Nannan to know him. Had Tang Ya told her herself?
Though she had long suspected it, when Huo Yuhao confirmed it in person, Jiang Nannan still felt that the world was truly small.
"Little Ya and I are roommates. She mentioned you and your mother to me before."
"Is that so?"
Huo Yuhao could not help growing curious. "What does Little Ya-jie say about me at the academy?"
The instant he said that, the room fell so quiet one could hear a pin drop.
(⊙o⊙)...
"Cough, cough. Um... well..."
Jiang Nannan's mind began racing at full speed. Her expression suddenly became somewhat complicated, her face turning red as she stammered as though there were something difficult to say.
"?"
Noticing that something was off, Huo Yuhao's smile gradually stiffened as well.
"What is it? Don't tell me Little Ya-jie says bad things about me at the academy?"
"No, no. She said she was very grateful that you and your mother took her in."
Jiang Nannan hurriedly waved her hands, but the blush on her face only deepened.
How was she supposed to say it!?
Tell him that his sister seemed to have improper designs on him?
Tell him that when his sister slept at night, she dreamed of him, treated her pillow as though it were him, and rolled around while hugging it? That she even liked to mutter strange things in her sleep?
Seeing Huo Yuhao's increasingly puzzled gaze, Jiang Nannan desperately searched her memories. At last, amid Tang Ya's mountain of indecent dream-talk about her little brother, she found a few scattered positive words.
"She said you're amazing. Cooking, medical knowledge, Soul Guidance Devices... it's like you know everything."
"...Is that so?"
Huo Yuhao looked at Jiang Nannan, who seemed ready to bury her head in the ground, and asked suspiciously.
"Mhm, mhm."
Tormented by her conscience, Jiang Nannan did not want to dwell on the topic any further. She nodded rapidly.
"Auntie's illness has been resolved, so I should—"
With the examination finished, Huo Yuhao was about to take his leave when Mother Jiang, who had been watching the show for quite some time, finally spoke up.
"Yuhao, wait. You helped us so much. You have to give us a chance to express our gratitude, don't you?"
Not giving Huo Yuhao a chance to speak, she continued.
"Today, Auntie is being discharged from the hospital. I was just planning to have a nice dinner tonight to celebrate. It would be too quiet with just my daughter and me eating, so give Auntie this chance to treat you to a meal, all right?"
She knew Huo Yuhao might be aware of their family's circumstances and had therefore refused compensation to avoid adding to their burden. That was why she had chosen to invite him to dinner, an activity that did not cost much.
And, just as she had expected, Huo Yuhao relaxed upon hearing this and did not refuse again.
"Then I'll trouble you, Auntie."
